Looking for some advice on the marriage visa

I always see people asking about the 400k in a Thai bank account, but I also saw there is an option to have a stable income of 40k+ equivalent deposited in a foreign account monthly over a twelve month period. Has anyone ever gone this route instead? Is there anything else I should know about? This would be my preferred route, especially since all the trouble with the Thai banks recently and having 400k locked away that I can’t touch.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This discussion focuses on the marriage visa options in Thailand, particularly the bank account requirement of either having 400,000 THB deposited or a verified income of 40,000 THB per month from abroad. Many commenters share insights about these requirements, emphasizing that each immigration office may have different policies regarding the acceptance of income affidavits and international transfers. There's a consensus that some offices may not accept the 40k/month option, and it's sensible to confirm with the local immigration office. Additionally, the conversation covers potential implications related to divorce and how the process works based on differing embassy procedures.

You can take the 400K out as soon as your extension is approved and go have a good time with it

Y'r last name is Dutch/Fries. If you have a Dutch passport, you still can get an income statement (Visumondersteuningsbrief in Dutch) from the Dutch Embassy in BKK.

Did the marriage for 14 years now.

I do put the 400.

First year you do it has to be there 3 months before. After that 2 months before. Then you can take out until the next extension.

Bangkok bank have recently changed it to 4 months.

I’m with kasikorn and just did mine this week. 2 months was fine.

*** IF your country's embassy in Bangkok still issues a certified income affidavit.

you don't

EITHER

need 12 months of transfers of 40,000 THB from abroad into your Thai bank account,

NOR

do you need a deposit of 400,000 THB in your Thai bank account,

You would only need this income affidavit for the financial proof for an application to the 1-year Extension of Stay Permit

*** some Immigrations might want to see that you actually transfer some money into your Thai bank account, and a bankbook showing 2 or 3 months of transfers are accepted as proof

Speak to your immigration office. Many won't accept 40k baht per month unless you earn it inside Thailand

Most immigration offices will not except the 40,000 baht a month option anymore, best to ask your immigration office which you will be using.

Your 40k monthly payments must be paid into your thai bank and have to be shown as a international payment. You have to have 12 months continuous payment into that account with no break. So can't miss a month. Letter from bank and print of statements.

I also understand that not all immigration offices except this method.

I know before when my embassy issued me a letter then I never had to show the 400k in bank for the first extension. UK don't issue anymore so need the 400k for first year.

This is my understanding.

the only small difference in my understanding but could be crucial depending on who you bank with overseas, us that for the Marriage visa ( unlike retirement ) is that there's no stipulation where the funds are from.

For the 40k route, 40k income from a Thai job or Embassy verified foreign sourced income. No other options at my immigration office.

if your country's embassy in Bangkok issues a certified income affidavit, confirming you make over 40,000 THB equivalent monthly, you can use this affidavit to apply on Immigration for the "1-year Extension of the Stay Permit based on being married to a Thai wife" . . . . for the application to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Family Visa through the online e-visa system of the Thai embassy in your home country, you can use original income documents

I believe you have to do the 400,000 first for a year and then you can do the income route... just keep in mind one thing. if you get divorced in Thailand on a marriage Visa you have 5 days to leave the country. if you keep your non-immigrant o Visa you can still stay.

just a thought.

@Bob ****
Actually, you don't get any days to leave the country. The moment the divorce is final, the marriage extension is null and void.

Great point; extremely important to keep your own visa intact and independent so you have protection after the marriage has run its course. Of course all the guys say "but she's different" right up until the point when they find out their joint bank account is now a big fat 0. If that isn't bad enough then do you want to have to leave the country? Protect yourself!
