I have question regarding Marriage Visa Extension based on Income. I understand that to get 1 year marriage visa extension you either need to bank 400,000 THB, or have a monthly income of 40,000 THB. I work remotely for my US employer, hence do not have a Thai work permit, but I do pay personal income taxes in Thailand on my income. Is it feasible for me to get the extension based on monthly income? Or getting an extension based on income is only possible if you work for a thai company and have a work permit?

The reason I want to go with the income route is because I think having 400,000 THB in an index fund will be more beneficial for me rather than let it rot in a Thai Bank.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To qualify for a one-year Marriage Visa extension in Thailand based on income, you need to show a consistent income of 40,000 THB per month, transferred into Thailand each month for the past 12 months. While some immigration offices may allow you to use this method without a Thai work permit, it varies by location. It's advisable to confirm with your local immigration office beforehand, as some offices might only permit this route for individuals with a Thai work permit. If you opt for the bank deposit route, note that the 400,000 THB must be held in a Thai bank for at least 2 months prior to application, but you can withdraw it afterward.

After your extension is inked in, you can withdraw the 400K, it only needs to be in the bank for the 2 months before you apply for an extension.

The way that works is you'd have to transfer in to the country a minimum of 40K baht a month, each month, every month for the previous 12 months before you apply for the next extension using monthly income method.

You need to check with your immigration office though, because while there is no rule saying you can't use monthly income method for marriage extension while working abroad, SOME offices will only let people do it if they legally work for a thai company (work permit etc)

Definitely check to see with your office well before you decide to show up and get the extension, because IF they say you can't do it and need to show banked money that 400K would have to be in the bank for 2 months before you apply for the next extension
