What are the new requirements for proving liquid cash for Thai visas as of May 1st?

Apparently as of May 1st Thai embassies in the US are requiring 3 months proof of access to 500,000 Bhat in liquid cash and they don’t recognize stocks or investments as liquid cash despite having instant access to them.

Has anyone encountered this yet?

I have the cash in the bank but moved it from my investments just over a month ago…

TLDR : Answer Summary
As of May 1st, Thai embassies in the US require applicants to provide proof of access to 500,000 Baht in liquid cash for visa applications, with stocks and investments not being accepted as proof. Applicants generally need to submit three months' bank statements, although there have been reports of variations in requirements. Some users clarified that if cash is proven to have been previously in investments, it may still be acceptable if shown in the correct format. There have been differing experiences reported regarding whether one statement suffices, indicating a lack of uniformity in enforcement across embassies.

This has literally been the case since July 15, 2024, the day they introduced the visa.

I’m going through my application with Los Angeles embassy now. Im in the same boat, but as long as it’s in liquid form now, I think we are ok. I’ll give feedback on my situation when I hear.

Also, make note that although it says “500,000฿” it also states “$17,000” on my request for further documents.

Yes, some embassies have started doing that since long time ago.

Stocks and shares have never been considered liquid cash, because they are an asset. It’s a strange thing to suggest or even think.

Cash means money you can access immediately, like withdrawing from a bank or ATM.

Savings are not the same either. They can be locked for a fixed period and not instantly available.

Shares are assets, not cash. Just because you have 500,000 baht in shares doesn’t mean you actually have 500,000 baht in hand. They can fluctuate in value and may be subject to taxes.

The 500,000 baht requirement refers to actual money in your bank account. This isn’t rocket science. It’s easy to understand why that’s the rule and why other forms like shares or locked savings aren’t accepted.

Anonymous participant 229 Yes I understand all that.

I do have access to that money at any time and it will never be below 500,000 bhat despite the market.

But I understand those are the rules

basically it's a matter of "self-insurance" like at hospital. They require payment before treat often.... If it requires you to liquidize stocks for example it's not liquid/cash, and may not be avoidable instantly without you don't much action

Did anyone apply that makes more than 500,000 per month?

I can send 12 months + of stmts showing 650k baht pay each month but I always dump it all on debt and just kept balance this month for applying DTV . Do I need to wait 3 more months keeping the balance or as long as it is there this week ?

@Eric *******
You make $20k a month and it all goes on debt, and you have no savings? You have money management issues.
Eric ********
Anonymous participant 229 I invested 2million in my company and still owe 600k or so.

I own cell towers and sell internet.

@Eric *******
so you are telling me you have that kind of investment and earnings and don’t even have the equivalent of 1% of the investment or 10% of your yearly salary in an emergency fund incase something happens?

I refer back to my initial comment
Eric ********
Anonymous participant 229 that’s right , but I also have nearly a full year of all my business bills paid and 170k in credit cards so emergency isn’t really a worry. It’s cash I don’t have because I pile all of it on my 8% -15% 600k on debt.I def took some big risks and I’m working on paying it all off . Living in Thailand helps !

wonderful 😊

I had to show 6 months of statements with 500k for each month. Stop complaining if you don't have it just wait

@David *******
that is not a requirement just proof of funds, makes no difference what you had in your account 3,6 months,ago, which consulate did you apply, was the proof of funds in a foreign bank or a Thai bank?

@John ********

Just a question.

Why are people so rude to each other in this group?

I find blocking divs makes social media life much more 'fluid' shall we say

Is it actually required to upload 3 months of statements? In the US thai embassy it seemed like you only needed to upload one recent statement showing that you had the funds, as of May 3 when I applied
Elías ********
I don't know whether the 3 months thing is new or not, but as far I remember, stocks or investments were never accepted as proof of income.

If you can prove that these were your investments and that you converted them into cash, then it should be fine. The three or six months of proof of ownership is basically just about making sure you're not borrowing the money from friends or an agency. But you could clarify that with them in advance. I think you can talk to them, since you have the money and it belongs to you.

this is what I was hoping and getting at.

So now you are deciding what the Embassy and Consulates in the USA should accept

@Greg *******
No, but what I wanted to say is that there is a certain logic behind it and he could clarify it in advance with the consulate 😊
Anonymous ******************
@Tim **********
not real logic because you fail to recognise when selling assets let’s say 500k of shares you could be up 10x then could have a big tax liability that could see half of that owned.
Greg ********
@Tim **********
He asked if anyone had had the experience with the various embassies and Consulates in the USA ie are there changes since May 1st. Saying it "Should be fine" is your interpretation. How would you know if they have been changes since May the 1st?
Anonymous ******************
Fair enough. Many embassies already do the same
Anonymous ******************
I had to show cash In My bank account that was the requirement back in July.
John **********
Stocks and investments aren't liquid cash. They do require 3 months of bank statements but I think the 500k baht or equivalent only needs to show in the final one
