TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among commenters indicates that stocks typically do not qualify as acceptable proof of the 500,000 baht financial requirement for living in Thailand. Most embassies require the funds to be readily available in a personal bank account, and while some individuals reported that their stock accounts were accepted, others stressed that cash in a bank account is necessary for immediate access. Selling stocks to meet the requirement was suggested, but there are concerns about the liquidity and tax implications.

Maybe use a short term Lombard loan against the portfolio for the extra amount

This is really the weirdest rule about the DTV. You can have a million dollars as stocks, CDs, etc. and it doesn't count!? I assure you they could sell tomorrow and have welllll over the 500k baht requirement (even with market fluctuations). Unfortunately if they do it, it becomes a taxable event. Furthermore, money sitting in a checking account makes practically NO interest. I would think most people that actually have the money wouldn't want it wasting away in an account that gets no interest ?!

In the past there has been big problems with foreigners, that couldn’t pay hospitalbills etc. if they got involved in a accident.

Under corona you had to show a medical insurance to overcome that problem of unpaid medical bills, but that did also stir up a lot of criticism and other problems.

But medical bills wasn’t the only finacial problem to be dealt whit, where foreigners misused the hospitality of Thailand, and to make sure those who make the problem also pay to solve the problem, Thailand now request a cash deposit, to cover those situations.

Bad boys out, good guys in.

Sell fixed income if you have it put in bank

I would sooner get a short term bank loan then sell equity at the moment you could miss the bounce back

No the money has to be readily available, i.ex. you get into a accident and have no insurance to cover, you have to be able to pay right away.

The requirement says 500.000 Baht in a bank account, why try to challenge that fundamental requirement, and risk loosing the 10.000+ baht fee

Apologies if I come off as stupid, but can't you sell off some of that stocks stuff for 10k and put it in your bank account? Then you'd have the required amount for the DTV, which is approx 17k. Again, I'm not a stocks person so I don't understand how you claim to have 40k worth of something and not be able to sell off some of it to get ACTUAL real money.

why sell it if you don’t have to. Selling creates a taxable event. Your Cash loses money sitting in the bank. Better off investing it.

I also spent a few hours today in this group searching for information and tips about doing it through the NY embassy. For some reason it seems that the search function was pulling up random posts that had nothing to do with NYC.
@James *******
not sure how you found those but thanks for posting! It seems the search function is not working properly for some of us
