TLDR : Answer Summary
A recent community discussion highlights the frustrations regarding the NON-B visa system in Thailand, indicating that shareholders only receive a 3-month visa. One year extensions are available only to directors or owners, leading to concerns about the practicality of current policies. Users also noted the diminishing options for visa extensions, particularly for foreign employees, and the financial implications for companies hiring Thai staff.

The escape valve used to be the 12 month Multi Entry B Visa - gone now for employees.

Companies don't want to sponsor Extensions for B Visa employees. One Farang employee garners 2 to 4 Thai employees. More than one Farang = times 2 / times 3. Even if done as "shadow" employees the Social Security tax must be paid. After the minimum wage increase several months ago - effective April 1 - the S.S. payment for each Thai employee equals nearly 1000 baht. If the company actually hired these Thai employees then costs spiral up.

Tod the only qualifier I should have added is Some as in 'Some Companies'. And from reading on other venues it is hardly just the South and the Islands. Of course many employers are able to and do the correct thing. But what I describe exists.

And as Lloyd accurately added not paying or not wanting to pay the minimum wage to Farang employees adds to the problem.

maybe you should qualify that and say "companies in the south of thailand (primarily on the islands)" :) I know hundreds of foreigners here in Bangkok on yearly extensions based on employment. None of them have a problem getting their paperwork from their employer to get their extensions.

and of course they don't want to pay the minimum wage to the foreigner too.

People should be getting extensions in country. Which is easy enough if you are getting paid the correct amount and have the required amount of Thai employees.

This is true, but it just exposes the ‘grey economy’ where some employers won’t comply and employees don’t know enough to realise.

This was announced a good few weeks ago.
