Heads up.

I have just been to the new Chiang Mai immigration office for letter of residency. Informed that it is now taking 4 weeks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The processing time for residency letters at the Chiang Mai immigration office has recently increased, with applicants now facing a wait of up to 4 weeks. However, there are reports of an express service available for 1,000 baht which can expedite the process to the next day if urgent. Local experiences suggest varying processing times across Thailand, with some individuals receiving their letters much quicker in places like Phuket. It raises questions about consistency in services and potential additional fees.

Not in Chiang Mai but last week in Phuket I got one in less than an hour and refused to pay saying I knew it was free. There’s an article in the Phuket News from around February 2018 from the local Immigration colonel confirming its free and anyone who is asked to pay should report them to him. Maybe you could print the article and ask why CM is different?

The four week wait is a prompter for you to ask if there’s an express service which as someone pointed out is 1,000 baht. I wasn’t at odds with your message, just offering my experience as a possible solution. The four week wait is a lie, it can be done while you wait. I didn’t advocate using an agent, never would as I agree wholeheartedly that doing so only make the corruption more endemic

they didn't ask for money just said the wait was 4 weeks. Not important to me as I have time but I posted to make others aware.

I know I can use an agent but would rather pay to the government than join the " wrong trail"

there are other agencies that do can do the residence cert in central Chiang Mai so you don't need to go out to immigration. Not sure if we can mention them in this group but they can be found easily enough by Googling.
