What are the current challenges and experiences related to obtaining a Thai DTV for cooking courses?

Jan 18, 2025
3 days ago
I spoke to an agent in Pattaya last week who told me that they’re stopped doing DTVs as they’re checking people so much and people being refused entries etc

Another agent told me they’re good to go for 95-100k Baht and enrollment into a cooking course is all that is needed and border runs or immigration stamp every 6 months

Anyone had one for a long time doing a cooking course or similar and not had/had any issues?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions highlight concerns over the difficulties in obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for pursuing cooking courses in Thailand. Several agents mention increased scrutiny and refusals at entry points, prompting some to consider alternative visa options like METV or Non-immigrant ED Visas. While some users report successful experiences with their DTV approved through cooking courses, others question the reliability of certain course offerings. There are mixed views on whether high fees charged by agents reflect necessary expenses or exploitation of the current visa process.
DTV VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
Chris *****
The reason is that some if not many people are cheating to obtain a DTV. It's likely more on the embassies' side than immigration's. These embassies are probably seeing identical documents from multiple applicants who pay high fees to get them in order to acquire DTVs. Do yourself a favor and apply for it only if you meet the qualifications. If not, consider applying for a METV or a Non-immigrant ED Visa instead.

Please remember, as has been stated in other groups on this matter, that agents stand to lose a lot of business because of these 5-year DTV visas.

Of course they are likely to want to make it sound as difficult and challenging as possible, as making it sound daunting makes them remain a necessary part of the process.

Take what they say with a grain of salt.

@Axl *****
I would agree with that. Much more to be made on ED and marriage visas in particular over DTV

@Axl *****
What about the agents making it sound very simple and straightforward forward like the agent in the OP? Agents I have spoke to have mostly told me DIY. Only 1 tried to push an expensive package on me.

My opinion is that if you can’t afford the deposit, then you probably can’t afford to live there.

So why ruin it for other people? Because this type of behavior just ruins it for everybody else.

People have paid bribes through agents for decades. It's estimated over 50% of retirement visas are dodgy because people didn't have the 800k in the bank. This DTV game is nothing new.

in you first sentence you 🤡.

What is clear is that you are not grasping this situation. Many people use agents for good reasons. Like retirees avoiding the 800k on deposit. You have to be a bit daft financially to leave 800k doing nothing for years on end. And cost is about 18k annually for agent renewals.

In the case of DTV, anyone sane isn’t gonna pay 95k baht to an agent to facilitate the visa. If needed, sell some stocks/ and fund your account with the 500k for a couple of weeks

if you have millions in assets then you have 500k in a deposit.

The first rule in finances is to first build up an emergency fund and then build on assets.

So in the event of an emergency you don't have to liquidate assets and potential make huge loses.

if they have assets they can take out a loan and borrow it for cheaper than what the agent charges …
Mac *******
@Christopher *******
they could yes, but many don't, they would sooner pay someone to sort it for them rather than start taking loans against assets out, money is a tool to be used to make life easier, just saying, not everyone who uses an agent is doing so because they can't afford to live here
Christopher ********

@Mac ******
you are a moron.

First of all you can put the 15k in an easy access account which earns a rate of 5% and access it just as quick if not quicker.

Second BTC is volatile and if you had a situation where you needed to cash out some for an emergency BTC could be down 30% at that moment which means you have made a significant lose.

This is again why you should always have a cash emergency fund, so you are never forced to liquidate an asset which could be in negative equity.

that’s my thinking, fairly unlikely but not impossible that they would risk their reputations if refused entry after 1 year

My hopes is that 100k includes sorting out immigration but how can that relate to a random immigration officer questioning you at re entry? It can’t really
Greg ********
Anonymous participant Maybe they do not care long term. Foreign agents Vs Thai agents etc.

Do some due diligence kn how long in business, which nationalities do they target if foreign etc.

As you rightly point out how can they have links with all of immigration. Look at how the Thai agents have their links with their local office in particular.
Anonymous *************

@Greg *******
what what I’ve read, they don’t. It’s also hard for an immigration officer at an airport to check on the spot quickly if you have been learning to cook Thai food as opposed to someone on an ED visa as to whether they’ve been learning to speak Thai by simply asking them some questions in Thai.

They couldn’t only ask for proof of further enrolment which you would think the agent would have that base covered if they have their own cooking school
Greg ********
Anonymous participant Just to add. Most people are not going to have any issues at all on the DTV. We might be overthinking it. The 2 agents I spoke to said it was mostly clients who had previous complicated immigration Histories who were questioned ie multiple border runs and Ed visas to stay years.
Greg ********
Anonymous participant Of course hard to check on cooking or MT. As you point out they can ask to see your future activities booked. How many agents have own school though. Most just work closely with outside schools. Anyway, nice little earner for schools and agents to provide ongoing proof and documentation. Add on a safe entry fee too if they have any nous.

i think should talk with school for next 6 months they should give us free payment receipt for next course.Or pay like 5000 baht just for for showing immigration in border

Greg ********
Anonymous participant There is another I know who has too. I spoke to 2 Thai agents Thursday and they both said a lot of their clients getting questioned now on entry. I said what about kf a person has own money plus finds own valid soft power course is that OK? They said that is fine. I think some of these agents have a very good relationship with local Imm office. They want to avoid any conflicts of interest and the other visa types are worth more to them and are ongoing. The Thai Agents are much more honest and open about the situation than the foreign get rich quick pi55 takers. What do they care if they have your 100k and yiu get refused entry after 1 year. They are not likely to even be around

Fair enough. If people need that then they have to just pay up. 99% of people should be able to do it themselves. I had a very similar experience to what you described. The 90k + THB one is taking the pi55 and I think aimed at a certain nation having a bit of a conflict. I spoke to 2 other Thai agents who were honest and open about the increased checks. These are at entry points too so the firmly held belief that you will never be questioned is not holding up. Workaytion looks the more solid option longer term. What if they ask to prove the ongoing cookery course in the future for entry?

that’s the worry

I’m 6 years off of retirement visa age, not yet married but plan to so that could be an option

60 days then extend for 30, border run, rinse and repeat for a while is an option then ED visa but ED seems quite pricey

DTV sounded perfect, paying 100k then being checked and refused entry doesn’t sound like much fun though
Greg ********
Anonymous participant I think the DTV visa is excellent for someone in your position. I know who the 100k package is from and it is ridiculous. I am sure you can find other cookery schools, or other soft power, on your own for example you could do a course with cheaply each year if you really needed. I think a gym is already anticipating this too and offering ongoing packages at pocket friendly prices.

Anonymous participant Who has told you they will not ask for proof of ongoing soft activities again for 5 years? Immigration have every right to ask you to prove you still qualify for the Visa. Some agents trying to sell you packages will tell you anything. There are others who will be honest.

@Greg *******
And the term 'ongoing' seems to have already been mentioned regarding extension requirements. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes something that gets checked randomly. But hey, according to some specialists here who don’t understand the system, we’re just spreading lies. 😝

Greg ********
@Greg *****
Totally agree with you. Many burying heads in sand and beleiving agents and others. Even if yiu had to do an ongoing activity to keep the visa live it is not exactly a burden is it? It is a very good visa. Workaytion is probably the easiest to continue as long as you are working remotely. Medical might be easy for someone with a long term chronic disease ie Type 2 diabetes with 3 month blood checks.
Greg ******
@Greg *******
Yes, if people were applying honestly for the real reasons and conditions of their visa, there wouldn’t be any issue. The problem is that some people want to obtain a 5-year visa (which I also hope to get) without meeting the requirements or purposes. It’s understandable that immigration is now cracking down on these.
