DTV Rejected at Savannakhet Despite a 9-Month Cooking Course and Complete Documents
I want to share my experience applying for a DTV under the soft-power / Thai cooking route at the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Savannakhet, in case it helps others considering this route.
My application:
- Course: 9-month Thai cooking program at Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy
- Funds: Well above the required amount, held in my personal account for more than three months
- Documents: Everything was submitted exactly as requested
- Interview: Attended the in-person interview at the Savannakhet consulate on 27 August 2026
- Outcome: The DTV was refused with the wording: “The applicant does not meet the eligibility criteria for DTV. The visa has therefore been issued as Tourist Visa. (cooking training)”
I was issued a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa instead.
What is disappointing is that I provided all documents truthfully and as requested, had sufficient funds in my own account for more than three months, and enrolled in a full nine-month course, not a short cooking class. Nevertheless, I received no specific reason for why I was considered ineligible for the DTV.
I know some people will say I should be happy that I received the METV. But obviously that is not what I applied for. If a six-month multiple-entry tourist visa had been my goal, I could have applied for that directly, paid the lower 5,000 THB visa fee, and not enrolled in or paid for a nine-month cooking course.
The reason I chose the course was to qualify for the DTV and have a realistic long-term option in Thailand: five-year validity and up to 180 days per entry. An METV is not equivalent; it is valid for only six months and allows 60 days per entry.
I am sharing this not to attack the consulate or the school, but so others understand that even a nine-month cooking course, complete paperwork, and strong financial evidence do not necessarily result in DTV approval at Savannakhet. If anyone has had a similar result, especially under the cooking/soft-power route, or received clarification about what “does not meet the eligibility criteria” meant, I would appreciate hearing your experience.
