What are the consequences of leaving the UK before receiving a Thai DTV visa decision?

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some guidance.

Just to clarify upfront: I’m fully aware that I’m required to remain in the UK until the visa process is finalized. I’m not questioning that rule.

I’m asking because there is a real possibility that I may need to leave the UK before the decision, and I’d like to understand the consequences, not debate whether I should stay or not.

Specifically:

• If leaving the UK before the decision leads to an automatic cancellation, would that negatively affect my immigration record or be considered a red flag?

• If the application is cancelled, would I still be able to apply again for the DTV from another country in the future?

• And in a different scenario: if the visa were approved while I am already outside the UK and entering Thailand as a tourist, is there any possibility of re-entering using that visa, or would it be invalid in that case?

I appreciate any insight from people who have factual information or personal experience with this situation. Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarity on the implications of leaving the UK before their DTV visa application is processed. Key concerns include the risk of application cancellation, potential negative effects on their immigration record, the ability to reapply for the DTV visa from abroad, and the validity of entering Thailand with an approved visa if they are outside the UK at the time of approval. Responses emphasize the importance of staying in the UK until the visa decision and suggest contacting the embassy for possible assistance.

Are you leaving the UK to come to Thailand or another country? My understanding and I may be wrong is that you just need to be outside of Thailand.

I would call the embassy, explain the situation, and ask if they can expedite your visa. They will likely be noncommittal but may quietly assist you (under promise and over deliver kind of thing). You won’t know for sure they will help you until (unless) the visa notification arrives In your email. Be prepared to cancel the application and forfeit the fee the day you leave if it comes to that.

Anonymous participant Sorry, but the “need to be in Thailand for 8 days” sounds a bit strange for someone who isn’t supposed to be working there. Could you postpone it? That would help you avoid the risk of being denied.

I don’t work there. Don’t take wrong conclusions. I have no ties to Thailand; I run an online business and all of my projects take place around the world, and outside of Asia.

Next week is my birthday, and I found out through my sister that my parents bought a surprise trip to see me in Thailand, they thought I would be there and didn’t know what to do because I am currently in London applying for a visa.

As this will be my parents’ first time in Thailand and they will only be there for eight days, I would really love to be able to spend time with them.

I have already called and explained that it may not be possible for me to be there during the first few days, but I am waiting to see if the approval comes through before then.

Anonymous participant Okay. I would recommend avoiding Thailand, even though staying in the UK is better, as they might request an interview or proof of location. I definitely think it would be safer if you stay nearby (Vietnam or other countries) with your family, rather than being in Thailand.

Anonymous participant 633 Agreed. Even if the parents flights can’t be changed, an add on flight to KL, Singapore, or other nearby places is very cheap.

Participante anónimo that's a no no then. In theory you need to stay in your country, but if you visit a third country, they might never know you did.

Visiting Thailand, instead, it's kind of easy for them to know.

The consequences of leaving the UK could be that you forfeit your application and lose the fee. If the visa is issued after you are in Thailand people have successfully left Thailand and re-entered on the visa but I've also heard of the visa being revoked at that point. In any case there's nothing stopping you reapplying later

hmmmmm 🤔... I've seen no factual reports of the DTV visa being REVOKED... for any reason.

You're correct ✅ they are supposed to stay in the country where they submitted the DTV visa until the decision is known.

Some who have left and entered Thailand as Visa Exempt Entry before the DTV visa decision is known... and is issued, need to leave Thailand and reenter Thailand to get the DTV visa stamped in entry for 180 days.

BEST to do so with an experienced border run service company to know that you will get the DTV 180 day stamp...

Or fly out and back...

yep. That's why I said I've *heard* of it. Unsubstantiated. But he's still playing with fire, particularly with regards the Thai consulate in the UK

I will need to be in Thailand for
****
days and then leave for 20 days.

After that, I would return and stay another 10 days, and then I would be out of the country for three months.

In principle, a tourist visa would be sufficient, but since I have already rented an apartment and want to leave my belongings there, I would like to be able to return those two times.

I haven’t entered Thailand at all this year yet, so I assume there should be no issue entering as a tourist.

However, the best-case scenario would definitely be to already have the DTV approved.

I will only actually start using the DTV and staying more than 180 days from August onwards.

Do not Apply for the DTV visa until you will be in the UK long enough to get the decision from the UK Thai Embassy.
