What are the best options for long-term medical insurance in Thailand as a tourist on a DTV?

Hey folks, I’ve been looking into medical insurance to cover me while in Thailand on a DTV. I was hoping to get something that would cover me for years with guaranteed renewals. But, I’ve been told that the local Thai insurers can’t cover me for long term health cover, because I’m officially a tourist, they can only offer travel insurance.

Seems the only option is the big international (expensive) providers.

Has anyone had any luck with long term medical cover?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the challenges of finding long-term medical insurance coverage for tourists in Thailand on a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). Users share suggestions of insurers that provide health cover without requiring a long-term residency status. Companies mentioned include Pacific Cross, AXA, Safetywing, AIA, and Now Health. Some commenters emphasize the importance of dealing with reputable international companies or Thai insurers that can handle claims efficiently, while also noting that local Thai insurers often cater primarily to tourists with travel insurance.

I would recommend just going with the reputable companies like Safetywings. That way, you'll know it will be good in case of emergencies. I've never had issues with them and had to do 2 claims so far.

If you intend to stay in Thailand for a prolonged period of time (over 1 year) buy from a Thai insurer, if you buy a policy from your home country your chances of a successful claim will be significantly lower. AIA is the best one but they won’t touch tourists (including DTV holders), next best is AXA. You can apply and buy online with no need to go through an agent, don’t listen to anyone who says you need an agent to help you make a claim etc etc, apart from make a commission from you they can’t do anything else. AXA has the best customer service staff than any other Thai company, possibly even better than AIA, so no need to involve a middle man. Also no need to say cheers or thanks, you are welcome 🙏😁

I've used Safetywing for a year and a half.

My ex worked at an insurance agent here in Thailand and I heard a lot of horror stories about Thai insurance companies refusing to help their clients or fight them on every baht they made claims for.

Safetywing has been a breeze. I've made 5 claims so far, and every time they have just accepted the claims and made the payouts, no questions asked.

They have two packages that cover you worldwide:

Pacific Cross does offer health insurance plans for residents of Thailand regardless of their visa type.

Travel insurance generally only covers for a maximum stay of 30 days in one country but can be extended to 60 days but very expensive imo Depends how long you want cover for, always check the small print t&c’s

John Hampton That's news to me. I travel yearly to Thailand for 4-6 months and have had travel insurance cover for the entirety of every visit I've made.

there are a number of companies, such as World Nomads, that do 12 months single trip travel insurance. Some of them also allow renewal

Yes you can do a medical insurance with a tourist visa.

Try AXA (they have one option that is possible for tourist visa and one not) or Alianz-Ayudaya

better you email several direct, they certainly don't offer long term TRAVEL insurance, but health cover I am sure they will, I certainly never been asked for visa, but will need a fixed address
