Do I need to cancel my visa before leaving Thailand if my work permit will be canceled after I leave?

I have a work permit, and I'm leaving the country. I don't have multiple re-entry, and my employer will cancel the work permit.

They said they can cancel the permit after I leave so I don't need to extend my visa.

Do I need to cancel my visa before I leave, or will it be canceled automatically when I leave the country?

Will there be an overstay when I come back if it didn't personally cancel the visa at immigration?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is leaving Thailand with an active work permit but without a re-entry permit, and they are uncertain about visa cancellation processes. Comments clarify that the Extension of Stay related to the work permit must be canceled before departure, while the visa itself may be automatically canceled upon exit if the work permit is also canceled. It's noted that there's a distinction between the work permit and the visa, with different rules applying to each. Additionally, it implies that an overstay could occur if the user does not precisely follow cancellation procedures.

The question is answered and understood, so I close this topic. Please be careful in what you post, there is a difference in visa and Extension of Stay, look inside your passport before you type visa to be sure. It saves lots of comments to get a good and to the point advice.

This is an Extension of Stay and MUST be cancelled on the last day of working before you leave the country at the same Immigration Office where you got this stamp:

the work permit is already cancelled this morning, I'm waiting for the receipt to take to immigration and cancel this visa

, check carefully the cancellation date when you get the receipt. If it's dated today, your extension is valid until today. So you may be on overstay until you leave.

Side note: If it's as of today, I would apply for tourist extension along with cancellation, then get denied stamp for 7days-to-leave-the country. Not sure how you travel from where you are to an international airport, it seems to be not near, I wouldn't want to travel a long way with an overstayed passport.

Hope they cancel yours on the day of your departure.

I'm at immigration now to cancel the visa, cause I'm flying out of Bangkok in two days, the work permit should be dated today, since it was cancelled today I guess, I didn't understand what you meant about getting the denied stamp? and would it be cheaper to pay 2 days overstay over extending the visa for 7 days?
Ellie *******
@Ariel ******
if you apply for an extension for whatever reason, it would be denied because you don't meet the requirement, then they give you 7days to leave the country.

It is the same extension fee of 1900thb, 2days overstay fine is 1000thb.

If you are caught (for example, at some checkpoint before you arrive at International airport) on overstaying even 1 day, you will be arrested, sent to iDC(Immigration Detention Center), and blacklisted for 5 years.

The decision is yours.

I think an extra 900 is probably safer, thanks

Thanks, this means you have an Extension of Stay which has to be cancelled at Khon Kaen Immigration on the last day of your employment.

There is a difference: This is a VISA and the 90 days you get on entry only get cancelled when you leave the country. You can stay without working until the last day of the Admitted until stamp:

What is what?

Are you inside Thailand on the first 90 days you got on the airport, so using your Visa?

Or did you visit the Immigration Office with lots of documents and got a new stamp with the line Extension of Stay is permitted up to xx/xx/xx?

It is your work permit, you have to cancel it and not rely on others to do it for you.

Depending on the approved stay inside Thailand I can explain what your next step for Immigration will be
Robert *******
If you are stil on the first 90 days from your Non Immigrant B visa, this will be cancelled when you leave the country and need a NEW visa on return if you like to work again.

@Robert ******
yes, legally the visa is cancelled the day the work permit is cancelled, but if I leave on the visa before the work permit is cancelled then the visa should be cancelled automatically upon exit?
Robert *******
@Ariel ******
Visa or Extension of Stay two different things with different rules and regulations.

Please show a picture of your current stay from your passport without personal details.

would that technically work?

@Ariel ******
yup, you can practically leave Thailand as long as your current visa is still valid. They might ask you to do a re-entry permit at the airport because thai immigration probably wants the workers to return back to the employers office for work but you can deny doing it, in which case your visa gets cancelled and thus also the work permit.

It does work, I'm unclear how. But my company has done it multiple times for staff who have gone abroad.
