What are the correct steps for canceling a work permit and extension of stay before leaving Thailand?

Looking to leave Thailand on Friday. I have a work permit and extension of stay. Company says they can supply a letter for me to take to immigration which will cancel my extension of stay and will give me 2 weeks to leave the country.

They also say they will cancel my work permit on Monday, after I’ve left the country.

Does this sound correct? Thoughts?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to leave Thailand with a work permit and an extension of stay. The company will provide a letter to cancel the extension and allow for a two-week departure period. However, commenters suggest the user should personally cancel their work permit to avoid future issues. They should gather a cancellation receipt to present at the immigration office when canceling their extension.

The letter to cancel your extension sounds great, BUT I think you're way better off cancelling your own work permit (seeing as it's YOUR booklet anyway).

Go cancel the work permit, then take the letter from the company and the receipt that you canceled the work permit to the immigration office. They will cancel your current extension and stamp you in to the date on the letter. Then you've officially canceled everything the correct way and won't have any problem down the road with either the Ministry of Labour or the Thai Immigration Office.

do you know if they both need to be done on same day? Cancelation of work permit and extension of stay?

I have no experience with trying to cancel an extension without a receipt you canceled the work permit.

I still think you should get your work permit and go cancel it yourself.

Thanks for your help. My company now has my permit book. Will there be an issue if I take the letter to cancel the extension without having the receipt for canceling work permit?

Best try and cancel yourself, my last job said it was cancelled and they never did it, caused a delay in my next work permit and visa

You're taking the correct action Leah. If you leave without properly cancelling it you will run into trouble trying to get a new visa. In fact, they may not even let you leave without the visa being cancelled (happened to a friend of mine on extension of stay).

As for the time allotted before you leave, it's set when the company cancels the visa. When they go to cancel the visa, have them put the date you're finished as the day you fly out. Then you have a visa until that day; otherwise, it's canceled the day they cancel it and you would either have to leave that day or, apply for an extension of stay for 1900 baht which would be denied but give you 7 days.

But I plan to return to Thailand on a different visa... so I’m hoping to do things correctly so as not to cause problems later on.
