TLDR : Answer Summary
As a holder of a British passport in Thailand, you can typically extend your visa once per entry. If you are on a tourist visa exemption, you are allowed to re-enter Thailand several times by air, with formal restrictions only for border crossings. Depending on your visa type, you may be able to apply for an extension of stay for up to one year, but it's best to speak with local immigration. Some recommend obtaining a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, which allows multiple 60-day stays with extensions, and suggest managing your stays strategically to comply with immigration laws.

in your case it's not how many times you can extend, its going to be how many times you can enter. Every visa exempt entry can be extended by 30 days but if you've been maximising your stay every time by taking that additional 7 days get out of Thailand stamp, it's an extension denied stamp not an extension, it's going to be questionable as to whether you are already at your limit

Are alternate 3 month gaps acceptable? Im thinking 3 months in Malaysia and 3 in Thailand. Alternate. So a foot in both camps. Two 3 month stints in Phuket each year. With a retirement visa in one (not sure which yet, as they are still messing around with MM2H)

Also from the UK

So if you come on tourist visa exemption you can come as much as you want by air.

Only can extend 1 time per entry.

I recommend you to do what I’m going to do this month.

If you have £5000 in your bank and can get bank statement proof you can actually pay £150 for a 6 month validity METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa)

Which will enable you to stay for 60 days each time + 30 day extension, then you can leave and come back via land border to do another 60 day + 30 day extention.

You can do land border 2 times per calander year, since we’re in March and can visit for 3 months at a time on this visa you could actually do land border runs way into next year.

Depending on your purpose of visiting Thailand. Immigration officer can be able to extend your stay for a period of up to 1 year and extend your stay annually.

Sorry I missread a bit. Visa extension can just be done one time at the local immigration, unless it’s an extension of stay on a long time visa. For visa exemption my answer under correct.

Formally it’s two a calendar year by road and no formal restrictions by air, but at some point you’ll be pulled aside and asked to get a proper visa if you want to spend longer time in Thailand. Boarder bouncing alone is higher risk than with a transport company.

does this mean I am fine to fly into Thailand 3 times a year? I thought maximum was 2? (I’m in Uk) thanks
Jan ******************
@Lee ********
There’s no formal restrictions on entering on visa exemption by air if you’re from one of the countries entitled. By road it’s maximum two times pr calendar year. But as said at a time you’ll risk they will ask you to get a visa if you want to stay longer time. It’s very easy to apply for a tourist visa online at home before you leave. Then you get 60 days with 30 days local extension.

sorry it’s not clear to me, I’ve I’ve been to Thailand twice by air both times visa exemption for less than 30 days can I then go a 3rd time in the same calendar year? The third time will be using evisa, thanks

The government don't like people that try to live here on exemptions, tvs and metvs.

Your travel history show that you are a genuine tourist, and you will not have any problems entering the country on visa exemption.

If you always fly, there's no limit to the amount of short trips you can have in a year

@Lee ********
Yes you can apply for a 60 days tourist e-visa at home. The restrictions are regarding people using visa exemption to stay longer time and travelling in and out of Thailand.

@Jan *****************
so I can go a third time in a calendar year yes or no?
Jan ******************
@Lee ********
Yes with a e-visa applied for and approved before you leave you’ll not have any problems.

yeah I’m gonna apply for next years trip, so I am fine then to go in December? By then I’d have visited twice , once in January and once in July, thanks

@Lee ********
With a tourist visa you will not have any problems entering. The issue could be too many visa exemptions.

@Jan *****************
still not garenteed entry with aTR or even metv. Lees chance of a pull but still can get stopped quizzed and even refused.

@Paulie *******

@Lee ********
Multi entry tourist visa and Tourist visa METV is best to have if plan to stay longer than 60 days imo.

I believe i arrived on visa exemption but when i spoke to one of the immigration officers im sure she said something along the lines of i can only do a visa extension every 60 days

@Tyson *******
you don't know if you are on a visa or visa exempt. Look in your passport. Maybe you should stay home.
Jan ******************
@Tyson *******
If you didn’t apply for a visa at home before you left, you’re on visa exemption. This gives you 30 days with possibility for 30 days extension one time at the local immigration. Then you’ll need to do a visa run to an embassy/consulate in a surrounding country to get a new tourist visa which gives you 60 days with 30 days extension or a boarder bounce which gives you a new 30 days visa exemption at the border. This can also be extended with another 30 days. Formally it’s two times by road pr calendar year. For tourist visa it’s no formal restriction.

Extension on what visa? Extension for what reason?

I arrived in Thailand with a visa exemption i believe, i have already left the country twice and extended my visa twice in between by 30 days and 7 days afterwards. I am here as a tourist.

You can get 1 extension per entry. But you're getting close to the point where you're going to start getting questioned at the airport why you're spending so much time in Thailand without a long term visa.
