TLDR : Answer Summary
The visa amnesty in Thailand has officially ended as of October 31st. Currently, individuals must seek an extension to their visa status. Until January 29th, extensions can be requested based on an inability to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions, allowing for an additional 60 days with the standard fee of 1,900 baht. The criteria for requesting an extension include stating that one cannot fly due to COVID-19 limitations.

Getting extension is easy, just pay... thailand need farangs to stay and spend money

Just put ' unable to fly due to Covid 19 restriction' that's what I put and was accepted.

What qualifies as ‘cannot fly’? Does having a mutant strain in the Uk count?

at this present time “I don’t want to fly”counts. In future you may have to prove you can’t but who knows.

Jon Hopkins. Tick the boxes, and put on your best "I'm an angel" look and you're home. It's your money they want. Hint: Don't wear your "Bad boys go to Pattaya" T-shirt! 🤣🤣

I wonder if someone who has recently arrived on a Tourist Visa can use this to stay longer. The situation back home isn't getting any better and i don't really want to go back. was looking into an education or volunteer visa, but this could work as well. at least for a few months.

Ryan Proulx. To be honest I doubt it. This "covid extension" was a short-term fix for people who claimed they were "stranded" in Thailand from March 2020. I really cannot see how this excuse could be used by people who have willingly returned to the country recently. Go for the education visa, not some bullshit illegal "volunteer" visa from a scungy agent who will charge you 60,000 baht plus for a shit visa

Jon Hopkins. You fill in the declaration, give that as the reason, pay your dosh, and you're in.

Amnesty has finished. Everyone has to apply for some form of extension. Until 29th January anyone can ask for an extension based on unable to travel due to Covid. This gives you 60 days for the usual 1,900 baht. That deadline *may* be extended but no one knows yet.

@Stuart ********
do you think you can apply before the deadline even though I am stamped in until the 29th?
Stuart *********
@Bim ******
for sure. You might “lose” a couple of days if you go on the
*****
etc but probably better to do that and avoid the rush on the 29th.

@Stuart ********
you don't lose any days going early they always stamp

days from your last stamp

@Michael *******
not for Covid extensions. Some offices will add on but others stamp you from the day you go in. All other extensions work the “adding on” way, but for some reason they do the Covid one different.
Michael ********
@Stuart ********
in Samui no problem going early

@Michael *******
in Phuket no so. Which is why I phrased it “you might lose a couple of days”. Each office makes up their own rules....

someone said go ten days before to apply to get another 60 days. Last time they took my passport for two weeks
Stuart *********
@Bim ******
I’m not sure why they said that. Go a couple of days before. Usually most offices give you a “under consideration” stamp for 15 days. And then you go back to get the remaining days. You are not on overstay with an under consideration stamp.
Bim *******
@Stuart ********
yes they did that the first time back in October but this one they took my passport. I will check thank you x

@Bim ******
not heard of immigration keeping your passport. Here in Phuket they just give you a receipt paper along with your passport back.

@Stuart ********
yes I have never had it before. I have been here 6 years on Thailand Elite visa and need to change to retirement in July doing a border bounce and coming back on a tourist visa but that wasn't possible so ended up on amnesty. Thankfully got an embassy letter but they still didn't allow me to apply inside the country so hence and am in the situation I am now.

@Bim ******
so many similar stories on here. They planned to do a bounce around April time but obviously couldn’t happen. Now on amnesty/unable to travel extensions. Just have to wait and see what the next options will be. I doubt they’ll want to “evict” people, so my guess is an ongoing ability to extend “due to Covid”, but if there is local tambon lockdowns they may well reintroduce “amnesty”.

Actually for long term visa extensions they do keep the passport for one day. You apply on day one and then pick up on day two.
