TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent reports indicate that Thai Immigration in Chiang Mai is requiring additional proof to support the income affidavit for U.S. citizens. This change involves the need for documentation that verifies the income reported in the affidavit, which does not necessarily have to come from a Thai bank account. Other foreign nationals, like Australians, might also be affected, but the specifics seem to vary. Community members have shared their experiences and suggested ways to navigate these requirements.
Robert Clifton Dailey your not getting it that there needs to be NO official announcement. Immigration have always had the right to ask for supporting documents. I guess now they are.
Okay and before this goes off the rails keep in mind it's ONLY in Chiang Mai and at this time ONLY for US citizens using the affidavit of income from abroad notary to meet the financials. The immigration office IS accepting the notary letter but they want proof that the amount you put on the form is actually hitting your bank account. it DOES NOT have to be a thai bank account.
Robert Clifton Dailey the US Embassy isn't vetting it. They have no need too. Immigration are vetting it by requesting the document's to back up your affidavit. Nothing wrong in that, they are entitled to ask for proof. They always have been.
Let's be clear that all Thai Immigration offices require proof of bank balance to meet amount of money necessary for long term visas. The financial affidavit from all foreign Consulates and Embassy's in Thailand is generally accepted 'instead' of bank statements. Chiang Mai Thai Immigration has till recently followed that policy, but now is requesting proof of the affidavit. The US government..and maybe others..does not require proof when getting the affidavit.
This was reported on this forum last week in another posting. Its good to get verification reports from those who have personally been asked for the added documentation. Thanks for your post.
