Is my plan to extend my stay in Thailand with a tourist visa still workable?

Hi there all,

I have just received my tourist visa that gives me 3 months.

My plan is still to stay in thailand for 6 months

I think there has been changers to visa that may effect me, such as boarder runs.

May plan

1. 3 months using my visa

2, exit , border run and I get 2 months

3. Immigration to get an extra 30 days

Is this still a workable idea?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a tourist visa valid for 3 months, planning to stay in Thailand for 6 months by executing a border run and seeking an extension. Commenters clarify that the tourist visa typically grants 60 days upon entry, with an option for a 30-day extension. While the user's plan is generally workable, there are potential changes in visa regulations that may affect how long they can stay after the border run.

I have used this same format for almost 1 and half years never had a problem. I'm married now to a wonderful Thai woman so it will be better for my Visa now

Hello David, just a curiosity considering I'll be in Thailand for the first time on May 1st. After the 90-day tourist visa, how can I do to extend the staying? Leave the country on the 90th day(for Laos or Cambogia for example) and come back after a few days? What are the exact steps?

I would use this way, pending eligibility for the Digital Nomad visa.
Chris *******
That is definitely workable and how I would do it if I didn’t have a dtv but it looks like the 60 day will be reduced to 30 days so you may only get 5 months this way by the time the first 90 days is done it could be changed. Who knows 🤷‍♂️

Just did my first boarder bounce in many years, got 60 days - BUT - big surprise to me, the boarder bounce now must include "1 sleep" across the boarder; next morning, you're on your way. Comment was made by senior immigration guy - that is a Cambodia 'requirement'; looks as if Thailand may stop the "1 sleep" in the future and just do the old time "boarder bounce".

Living in Chiang Mai, what's the best boarder crossing for a visa run?

Why not get 6 mounts tourist visa and can stay 9 mounts. Or take one stamp 60 plus 30 on arrive and second on Border Run again 60 plus 30.

@Petrov *******
we got a few reports from a few people who got refused entry to receive month number 7 and 8. So 9 months are not guaranteed. 6 to 8 months, maybe.

Better to do Border Run By land but if it is your first visit on Thailand should not have problem to get stamp any way with out issue.

Can you please explain a little more of what you just said, I originally thought my tourist visa gives me 3 months, unfortunately I got it wrong and it only gives me 2month, My plan is 6months in Thailand. so its a quick trip to the boarder and back to extend it by 30 or 60 days then a a trip to immigration. Just thinking, I understand I can do the Thai Immagration extension only once, However, after I do the Thai Immagration first, then Boarder run, then can I do a Thai immigration again?

The 3-months visa validity is not the same as the duration of the stay permit you will receive upon entry.

The visa is valid to use for one entry (single entry) for three months, starting from its issue date. You will get stamped in for 60 days.

You can buy a 30-days touristic extension on Immigration for 1900.- Baht for each entry, but only once. . Before these are up, you need to exit Thailand and you might be able to get stamped in on a visa-exempt entry for 60 days (at least at the moment).

But be aware that each visa-exempt entry is at the sole discretion of a border official.

Best is to be prepared to show the three proofs: 20,000 THB or equivalent in cash, a booked accomodation for the next few nights and an onward travel proof out of Thailand within these 60 days

You would be better off with a multi-entry 6-months tourist visa. This visa will be a better guarantee to enjoy a 6-months stay

Ahhh, it gives you 60 days, then you'd have to pay to get an additional 30 days added at your local immigration office

@Stephen *******
You have to apply for the 30 days extention, it's not a given!

he is new to Thailand, they will not knock him back on an extension

Tourist visa does not give 3 months. It gives you 60 days on entry. You can apply one time for a 30-day extension.

Your plan should work, unless they change visa exempt back to 30 days. Then your border bounce will only give you 30 days plus a 30 day extension.

He’s got a tourist visa for 3 months. Then he will leave and come back to get the 60 visa exemption.

@Ralph ******
Did you even read my message? Tourist visas are NOT for 3 months. And no one knows if visa exempt will be 60 days or 30 days in the future. So how you can you make a plan for getting 60 day visa exempt 3 months from now?
Peter ****************
@Ralph ******
There is no tourist visa for 3 months. Valid for 3 months but when you enter Thailand, you can stay 60 days. After that you can get 30 days extension at an Imm. office for 1,900฿.

@Peter ***************
, this is correct.

@Peter ***************
Well, you can make the plan but it may not work!

You have to enter Thailand within these 3 months to get a 60 day stamp.
Graeme ******
@Stephen ***********
you have 3 months to use the visa, then when you do and enter thailand you will get a 60 day stamp not a 90 day stamp. This is a normal 60 day single entry tourist visa
Graham ******
@Stephen ***********
Valid for 90 days but you get a 60 day entry stamp on entry as explained above
