Don't get your DTV and then renew your passport, or you are back to square one.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When renewing your passport while holding a long-term visa in Thailand, it is crucial to carry your old passport alongside your new one, as the visa is linked to the old passport number. Although the Thai immigration system can check electronic records, carrying both passports can help avoid confusion during travel. Some discussions suggest that the visa, particularly the DTV (Digital Visa), does not need to be transferred to the new passport, but it is good practice to retain the old passport for reference, especially if any issues arise.

Thanks to most posters, maybe all is not lost. I was going off the info the Australian Thai Embassy emailed me, that the visa was linked to my old passport and I needed to re-apply (and pay again) for my new passport. It seemed a bit odd.

Kent Michael I think they are mistaken. The MFA issues the DTV Visa but that is the end of their involvement in all practical matters. Immigrstion are responsible after that. You will be fine.

I have a sticker visa, and most advice I've seen is to carry both passports when I have to renew. But it seems that the IO can just pull an electronic visa record in the system by scanning your passport, so it may not be strictly necessary to carry your old passport if you get a passport replacement. Even so, maybe it'd be good practice to carry your old passport with you, but just seems like a nuisance. I'd almost rather have the e-visa to avoid the trouble and worry of losing the old passport.

Had an agent go today to transfer visa to new passport (in phuket) cost 2000 baht

You just have to carry your old passport with you for the remainder of your 5 years. The visa was issued under your old passport number, which is why you'll have to carry that passport. But the entry stamps will go into your new passport. If you lose your old passport then yes, your visa is done, but for now you're fine.

Ignore people telling you to go to immigration to transfer the visa, because there is nothing to transfer. The visa is not in your passport, it's the printout from the embassy.

The Visa is not "Done" if you lost your old passport. Do you just dream these scenarios up all on your own.

Are you for real ?? You think you are the first to get a new passport with long-term visa or stamp. Your DTV is an email so you have it electronic. Your stamp is for 180 days take your old passport if you want. Immigration has electronic record you think the only record is your stamp please this has been discussed here 1000 times. You are so naive about your visa and passport it's your responsibility to know before you get to this point. Don't be lazy

Just carry both passports going forward

No stress at all. Next time you land in Thailand show proof of DTV and you're good to go. If you still have the old passport keep it with you, if not no stress.

Go to Immigration and they will update the system with new passport number and details.

@Greg *******
No need to go to immigration. They can't do anything since it's an evisa. There is nothing to transfer. You just carry both passports for the remainder of the 5 years.

@Brandon ***********
They can but surely the immigration system can be updated with new passport number. It will be needed for TM30 and TM47 will it not?

@Greg *******
Immigration did not issue the visa. Immigration is not under the MFA.

I have read reports on this group stating Immigration can update their records with the new passport ID. Yet, I’m unsure if these folks still need to bring both passports.

Once you are in Thailand you are following immigration rules and NOT MFA. They, MFA, also state that the issuing of the visa is not a guarantee of entry. This is very clear and the MFA point this out on their website. Immigration control entry and extension NOT MFA. When you do 90 day report it is not to MFA. TM30 is not to MFA. This is very basic.

Isn't the visa essentially a QR code that you can keep in your email account?

No you carry old passport then it shows you are on dtv you present both passports
Jeremy *****
This has infact been discussed many times

@Jeremy ****
yes, because immigration has records of your name, passport number, nationality, age etc, and if everything else matches you are likely to pass without issues.

Why don't you just get your visa transferred to your new passport?

I've done this as well, not with DTV but with tourist visa. Went to BKK immigration and they transferred it without issue to my new passport.

I have my residency for New Zealand and they transfer it to new passport. I am sure that Thailand will do the same. Otherwise as others have said, keep old passport and show that.
Brandon ************
@Andries ********
There is no visa in the passport to transfer. It's an evisa
Andries *********
@Brandon ***********
Yes! Just like my NZ residency. Thai immigration can sort it out and transfer to new passport for sure. A stamp or e-visa makes no difference.

Embassy

The Embassy cannot transfer a visa.

With other visas I just took old and new passports to immigration. They updated the system and stamped a new visa in new passport. However, DTV is electronic nothing to stamp in new passport. It is worth having the immigration system updated though.
Quincy *******
Wait, why? Can they not just check the computer records and your biometrics to see that you're already good?
Quincy *******
Also, did you renew your passport while you were already in Thailand?
