I hear from different sources different information on the visa regulations for kids in Thailand.

Any experiences on kids under 3? Is it necessary to apply for a dtv visa for my 1,5 year old or not? Thanks for sharing experiences! 🙏🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on whether children under 3 years old require a DTV (Dependent Visa) in Thailand. Several contributors share their experiences, suggesting that it's advisable to apply for a visa for children to avoid potential issues with immigration. They note that while children under 15 can’t be fined and under 17 can’t be banned, overstaying still poses risks for future travel and insurance complications. The cost for a DTV is mentioned to be around 10,000 baht for five years, and many emphasize the importance of securing visas for peace of mind.

Our daughter was 3 and we got a dependent visa for her. Officials are starting to crack down on visas and I would always say it’s better safe than sorry, personally. I wouldn’t risk one stubborn immigration officer denying me entry because I didn’t want to get my child a visa.

Friends of ours who have been here for almost a decade didn’t get a visa for their baby who was born here and they just went on a trip to Japan and their baby got a red stamp for overstay in his passport. They wound up letting him back into Thailand but that entire time they were gone they didn’t know if they were going to be able to make it back in.

I would just get your kid a visa ❤️

Children under 15 cannot be fined, and children under 17 cannot be banned. They will get an overstay stamp which can cause issues entering other countries.

I would suggest to do it also for your kids not matter what their age is. I did it for my 2 and 5 years old. I dont want to have any issue when leaving and coming back into the country

one question if that’s okay… , do I wait to apply for my baby until mine gets approved? Or do I apply at the same time for the two of us? 🙏🙏

Participant(e) anonyme I was able to apply for dependents at the same time as mine ( main holder) but usually you do your visa before and once approved the dependents. Good luck :-)

This issue has been raised previously 1) if you come for 180 days and the child comes on 60 day visa exempt and overstayed there is no fine. However, the IO has discretion regarding future entries. 2) If someone is on overstay the insurances companies will not stump up when you need them. Seen GoFundMe requests when guys come off bikes on overstay and insurance will not pay. The DTV for your child is 10k for 5 years. Is it worth trying to save such a small amount over peace of mind?

Anonymous participant Best decision. The insurance is the biggie for me. Hospital costs can mount very quickly in private hospitals in Thailand. 2 years ago this month I slipped in shower and fractured my humerus quite badly. I did got to the most expensive hospital in Thailand admittedly but the bill for the Operation and 3 nights stay was 980k THB. Insurance paid

Anonymous participant It was very good insurance. When I was in the ER they agreed all payments. When it came to discharge they disputed payments. Bumrungrad said go home and rest. We will deal with it. 2 days later email from Bumrungrad saying all sorted. They may be expensive but they are good at what they do both medically and support.
