Is a flight ticket within 90 days acceptable for proof of onward travel when applying for a Thai tourist visa?

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about applying for the Thai tourist visa at the Bali consulate, but I have a couple questions. One of their requirements is onward travel out of Thailand. Has anyone been there recently and can confirm whether or not flight tickets within 90 days (extension period) are acceptable? This is what I have currently and I'd rather not buy a flight to burn it just for the sake of the visa. If not, I've read some people saying they bought bus tickets as proof of onward travel because they're cheaper, but I'm confused as to how this can work, because you have to physically walk across the border yourself, so how can this be proof of onward travel? Thoughts on this? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is inquiring about the acceptability of flight tickets within 90 days as proof of onward travel for a Thai tourist visa application at the Bali consulate. Several community members confirmed that a valid onward travel ticket is required, noting that bus tickets to border cities might not be sufficient, while train tickets to neighboring countries can be acceptable. One commenter recommended refundable flight tickets as a practical option. Ultimately, the poster's experience at the consulate reflected that a flight out of Thailand within the 90-day extension period was considered acceptable.

Thanks. I did use the search beforehand and saw that but I thought I would ask for current info if it was available. I submitted my application today and contrary to that post, the employee said my flight out of Thailand within the 90-day extension period was fine. He also confirmed it was ok that I wrote 90 days as duration of stay on the form.

glad it worked out, few people really use that consulate (and even fewer write about it) :O

And this is as far as it goes with how to book a ticket to leave Thailand. Face it or not, you need to leave Thailand, nothing wrong to book a flight/train or bus ticket and use it to leave. Every Embassy or Consulate know that you can extend the initial 60 days with another 30 days at Immigration Office and have no problems with proof of onward travel within these 90 days.

Robert - in fact Hanoi recently refused a 90 day ticket and insisted on a 60 day ticket as “the extension is not guaranteed” so maybe not every embassy knows 😉

You can always buy a full coach, fully refundable air ticket

- I use Expedia for this; you can filter your search for refundable options. It’s worked for me a couple of times now with a full refund received - you just have to remember to book and print the ticket just before visa application submission, and to cancel it on time.

I have considered this but wouldn't really know where to look. I usually just use Air Asia and I don't think they have this option (correct me if I'm wrong). Do you know any airlines that offer this?

You need proof on onward travel, this means a ticket where you leave Thailand. So f.e a bus ticket to the border city Nong Khai does not work, but a train ticket to Vientiane in Laos works.

Right, this makes sense. I wasn't seeing the straight-through tickets before. Thanks :)
