Do I need an outbound plane ticket to apply for a tourist visa to Thailand?

I'm going to Thailand in July. The intention is to stay 1or 2months and then go on to Vietnam, Cambodia etc.

I only have a 1 way plane ticket into the country as we want flexibility to decide how long we want to stay and where we go next.

We prefer to travel overland rather than flying everywhere

I understand I need to have an outbound ticket as well in order to get a tourist visa and be allowed to enter the country.

Is that right?

If so

How do I overcome the need to show immigration an outbound plane ticket?

For example could I get a train ticket to another country and show that?

Any advice welcome

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation addresses the requirement of having an outbound ticket to enter Thailand with a tourist visa. Although formally required, many users share experiences indicating that immigration rarely checks for onward travel tickets upon entry. However, airlines may enforce this policy more strictly. Suggestions include booking low-cost train or bus tickets, or using fictitious return tickets for visa applications. Ultimately, travelers are advised to verify policies with their airline and the Thai embassy.

one does not what to find out the hard way when an over zealous check in agent refuses to issue boarding pass

it’s a real booking that’s cancelled after 48 hours.

I usually buy a Cheap one way out to where I’m going anyway

If I use it great

If not I may only lose $40 to $50

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

thaievisa.go.th

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

Nope, it's either/or. If you travel with a visa, you need your proof of onward travel at the application stage. If you travel without a visa, the requirement lies at the entry stage (as a placeholder of the then absent visa application stage). It's not required at both stages.

But it is required once in both scenarios, so do need a backup plan.

Dont worry about it, they never ask. Btw, you can easily get a 90 day visa for vietnam online for $25.

@Hovvard *****
airlines check more often than not. Embassies also really want to see outbound travel, if you apply for a visa.

Not everyone requires a Visa to enter Vietnam. A UK passport holder does not, for example, and gets 45 days.

This might help, essentially you book a dummy return ticket use the details for your visa then cancel once you get your visa ~

Same here, I think we will book cheap bus/train tickets that we can either cancel or sacrifice

will they accept a bus or train ticket rather than a plane ticket?

The first question is anyway if you’re embassy will issue a tourist visa without an onward flight ticket when you apply. Jfr my previous answer.
Steve ******
No you dont

@Steve *****
sometimes do, done it many times and had major issues twice. Depends on the person you come across at immigration

It’s a bit embassy dependent if you need an onward ticket for to apply for a tourist visa. Some embassy issues tourist visa just with an inbound ticket, some with an onward ticket within 90 days and some demand an onward ticket within 60 days.

This is anyway rarely checked at the immigration in Thailand, but formally an onward ticket is required for a tourist visa entry as well.

You can risk your airline will ask for it during check in, the highest risk is normally a one way ticket on visa exemption, but based on feedbacks it’s clear that people also have been denied check in on a tourist visa with a one way ticket. I personally would have called the airline and asked, -if your embassy accepts to give you a tourist visa with just an inbound ticket in the first place.

I know someone who had to buy the return ticket at the check in desk of the airline when trying to board the plane. They had to go get cash too. 🤔 so it defo happens.

@Rob ******
they ask sometimes and can be a big issue

Immigration isn't likely to ask you to see a plane ticket out of Thailand. That's your airline that might ask this. You need to call them and ask them what their policy is for people traveling to Thailand without a visa or with a tourist visa. Many airlines will require you to show proof of leaving Thailand before they will let you board your flight.

I once was going to thailand with my passport without a return ticket. The airline just about not let me on the flight. I told them once there I would apply for a 30 day extension and then go into Los with an approved visa for a week then back to thailand if I needed more time . They finally let me on. The reason I did not know when I was flying back to US, was that we were having issues with a K1 visa at the embassy in Bangkok. Luck and Siam Legal made everything fall into place in 7 weeks. Be calm is the key

Yes. But the airlines ask for this because Thailand requires them to ask for this. So they try to nip it in the bud before you arrive. Before it becomes a problem for Thailand customs.
