Do I need onward transport to obtain a 60-day tourist visa from the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur?

I am wanting to get a 60 day visa from Kuala Lumpur.

I have all needed documention apart from onward transport as I was hoping to get a 30 day extension before leaving Thailand on the slow boat to Cambodia.

As I will be applying for the visa from the embassy is it a must that I have onward transport?

If so how do people usually go about the 30 extensions (is it a case of just changing dates of onward transport once in the country)

Hope you can clarify

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking a 60-day tourist visa from the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur but lacks proof of onward travel. Many commenters suggest that the embassy requires proof of onward transportation, and one user recounts their experience entering Thailand without this but warns about the increased scrutiny when applying for a visa. Suggestions include purchasing a low-cost bus or flight ticket for proof of onward travel or considering applying at the Thai Consulate in Vientiane, Laos, where proof may not be necessary. The conversation highlights the complexity of visa regulations and the importance of planning for travel out of Thailand.

It seems she knows her options and is planning according the requirements of the Embassy in KL. I wish her a good time in Koh Phangan.

Go to Vientiane.

Unfortunately all three consulates in Malaysia require proof of onward travel to get a tourist visa from them.

KL doesn't require proof of funds though, but both Penang and Kota Bharu do.

Perhaps buy either a cheap throw away bus ticket from say Bangkok to Siem Reap

OR

actually book an onward flight within 90 days of you getting a tourist visa. Even with a 30 day extension you're gonna hafta go somewhere when you run outta time here.

it's as broad as it's long really. You could either buy a bus ticket to Cambodia or Laos. That's the cheapest onward transport. Or you book a flight to Vientiane (pretty cheap with Air Asia) and get a visa there.

Joe once you apply for the visa you have 3months to enter Thailand before it expires.

I am considering booking a flight for 90days after I plan on entering and informing the embassy I plan on entering 30days after I actually do.

This should satisfy their need for onward transport

It also means I can get the 60 days plus extension without having to book/cancel/book onward transport

This satisfies the embassy's requirements and means I don't have to piss around

Does this make sense
Robert *******
The Thai Consulate in Vientiane Laos does not require proof of onward travel.

@Diane *******
Yeah... get a tourist visa (noting the requirements of the embassy in KL, discussed at length elsewhere)

@Li**
I am then staying an extra month to do some diving.

In total I will be there for around 70 days so having a 60 day visa (then getting an extension from Koh Samui) would be easier than getting my extension after the 'free' 30 days then leaving Thailand to do a visa run for the sake of 10 extra days.

Hope that makes sense ☺️

@Diane *******
you don't need a visa to stay in someone's house and occasionally walk their dog - other than a tourist visa if (on a UK passport) you plan to stay longer than 30 days...

Thanks for the advice I will bear that in mind,

However I have checked and double checked all my visa stipulations and for that specific point you can volunteer for less than 4weeks without needing to obtain the NI O visa.

I'm not watching the dog for 60 days as I am there to learn how to dive and visit the islands.

Didn't expand on this as it was not/is not relevant to my original post.

I am quite confident that I within all the boundaries that the Thai embassy requires and will look at getting a flight from Thailand in 60 days as it seems the best course reading everyone's advice
Robert *******
Many people do does not make it legit. At least you know that what you're going to do is not allowed by Thai law, don't shout it around and be careful out there.

Many legitimate organizations get tourists to volunteer in return for accommodation in Thailand under tourist visas.

Again I am not going against any of the visa stipulations and my original post was not trying to break the law it was clarifying how so many tourists obtain 60days plus their 30days with fixed onward transport booked as logistically it is a waste of money having to book transport knowing I would be applying for an extension.

You'll also be pleased to know I am not running any businesses whilst there, the owner of the dive school

Is lucky enough too have actual employees do that for them so don't worry!

@Diane *******
It was not me who wrote this down: "We are staying with dog sitting for a friend (also run a dive school) - not getting any money just accommodation for a couple of months " Even when you do dog sitting for free accommodation it is a paid job by Thai law.

The reason I mentioned the dive center was to separate from the fact I would be staying in proper lodgings rather than with a friend (which I know you need different documentation for)
Diane **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Who said anything about running a dive center 😂😂

I said she had a dive center which I am booked into staying in their accommodation.

I am also watching their dog whilst they go away feee of charge.

In what way is any of that going against visa regulations.

Best to ask rather than make presumptions
Robert *******
@Diane *******
It is not the best thing to shout around that you go dog sitting and running a dive center on a tourist visa. You need a Non Immigrant B visa and Work Permit for that.

@Diane *******
not sure if you found there requirements list. I did a screenshot for you.

Oh no sorry ☺️

Just seems to be the cheapest place to fly to if I need to purchase an onward travel ticket.

Thanks for your advice ☺️

@Diane *******
sorry. I thought you was going to Vietnam to obtain the visa for Thailand.
Diane **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
I've already entered Vietnam and didn't have a problem.

I also won't be flying there I will just use my booking as onward travel

Once in Thailand I'll just have to cancel my reservation
Ron *******
I think you'll find Vietnam want the same plus proof of funds in a Bank account.

It would be Koh Phagnan (if that's how you spell it ☺️)

We are staying with dog sitting for a friend (also run a dive school) - not getting any money just accommodation for a couple of months then the plan was to get the 30 days to head to the north of Thailand then Cambodia.

Hmmm I can book a flight to Vietnam for quite cheap so maybe I will do that so if worst case happens I will be able to enter

Thanks again for the info, better to be prepared ☺️
Ron *******
KL may not even give the visa on the presumption that your going to extend another 30 days. Penang won't. I'm not certain about KL but the onward travel may need to be within the 60 day visa validity.

Joseph Michael Pedro III because I am in Malaysia and my next stop is Thailand, I don't want to enter for just 30 days hence I wish to go to a Thai embassy in Malaysia and apply for a 60 visa

Unsure what is unclear about my post

Joseph

I've already entered Thailand for 30 days without onward transport and fortunately this was not a problem.

As I am applying for a visa from the embassy I am aware there will be more scrutiny of documents etc which I am happy to supply.

However my only query is that many people obviously get the 60 visas, then get extensions whilst in the country so unless they change their onward travel arrangements once there, they must have been issued the 60 days without onward travel

Obviously realize that they may be clamping down for the above issues. Just thought I would see what the general consensus is before having to book transport

I know I will not be using.

Thanks for the info

I am making travel plans out of Thailand.

I am in Malaysia
Robert *******
Than you need to make travel plans out of Thailand just before 90 days after the day you like to enter Thailand. You have to leave Thailand anyway, so a little planning does not hurt.

I'm currently in Malaysia and wanting to get the visa from here before entering Thailand

I'm from the U.K (forgot to mention that bit).

Is there anyway to apply for the 60days and get around the onward transport?

I know a lot of people do visa runs to renter Thailand etc and I presume they all don't have onward transport.

Just a bit of a pain as we aren't sure of dates yet as most of our travelling as been ad hoc so far
Ron *******
Diane Lesley no. Only Vietiane in Laos allows it. Penang can ask you to supply a flight back to your own country.
Diane **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Is there another embassy within Malaysia you are aware of that I may be able to get one without the onward travel
Ron *******
Best not to use KL if you can't supply EXACTLY what they require. You simply won't get a visa there otherwise.
Robert *******
You have to check first if your country of origin in not listed. Than you choose the visa and tick all the boxes of the checklist.
