Can I use a cheap onward flight as proof of exit from Thailand on a Non-O visa?

Hello there,

I hope you are all doing well. So, here’s my situation: I booked a flight months ago to return to Thailand on July 26 and since I planned on getting the Non O, I booked the cheapest return flight I could find in October, so within the 90 day limit (I didn’t plan on using this return flight as I will apply for the retirement visa). Now, it looks like I can return to Thailand a couple of weeks sooner so, I can easily and inexpensively change the flight to Thailand however, to change the return flight would be very expensive. Question: Can I keep the return flight date as it is (which would mean more than 90 days) and book a cheap onward flight just to show the airlines that I will exit Thailand within those 90 days or will they want this same ticket to show a return flight within the 90 days? If it is possible to use a cheap onward flight ticket as proof of exit, how many weeks/months in advance can it be booked? I would need to book it at least two months before I use it.

Has anyone does this before recently?

The option Singapore Airlines gave me was to cancel this flight, get an almost full refund and then book another flight, but it would cost me a lot more than the ticket I have now because I booked it way back in February. Of course, if that is the only/best option, I will do it. I look forward to reading your suggestions.

Thanks for your expertise.

Have a great day. Stay cool if you’re in Thailand at the moment.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on whether they can keep their return flight beyond the 90-day limit while using a cheap onward flight as proof of exit from Thailand. Community responses indicate that with a Non-O visa, proof of onward travel may not be necessary, but it's wise to check with the airline, as they may still require it. Options discussed include booking an onward ticket close to departure or using inexpensive bus tickets as proof of onward travel.

The day prior to departure buy an outbound ticket on onwardflights.com the ticket is good for 3 days and is canceled when you don't pay for it. The service will cost not much more than $10.

Don’t change your flight dates.

Problem solved.

In the past, I have used bus tickets to show "Onward Travel", The cheapest I found was Hat Yai to Penang. As you already know, you don't actually have to get on the bus you just have to show that you've purchased tickets to leave Thailand.

The only one that’s going to say anything is your airline and if your entering on a 30 day stamp the flight must be 30 days

I’ll be entering on a 90 day Non O visa but just in case, I’ll book a cheap onward flight to show the airlines. Better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for commenting. 😊

as
@Bob *********
explains, this can be the case and reason why your airline will ask for an onward ticket. And you got a long term visa.

@Kay *****
you won’t need an onward ticket on a non-o visa

You guys are the best! Thank you.

I did the same as you, and only booked a one way flight out to Thailand, no problems.

If you leave on a 90 days Non O visa you’re not obligated to show any proof of a return/onward ticket.

You said you plan on getting the non-O.

Are you planning on getting the non-O at the Thai embassy in your country before your fly to Thailand, or are you planning on getting it after you arrive in Thailand?

If you get it before, then you don't need any return flight. The non-O is a long-term visa and does not require proof of leaving Thailand.

If you are not getting the non-O before you travel, you should consider it since it will make getting a bank account much easier. It's almost impossible to get a bank account on your own now with a visa exempt stamp or a tourist visa.

But if you fly with just a tourist visa then you need to check with your airline. They are the only ones who might ask you for proof of leaving Thailand. If they have this requirement you would need to meet their requirement, whatever it is. Normally the fact that you can get an extension does not factor in, and it would need to be an exit within 60 days.

Hi Brandon, nice to hear from you. Yes, I will get the Non O here in France (I have already applied for it). I was thinking, just to be sure I don't have any hassles, that perhaps I could book an Onward Flight for any day in September the day before I depart (so it would still be valid when I get to Bangkok as Onward Flight cancels the booking 48-72 hours after you pay for it.) Am I being overly cautious/paranoid?

@Kay *****
I will be doing exactly this and book get an onward ticket the day before I leave. I already have a non-O visa, but I don’t want any hassle from the airlines.

There is no guarantee that the flight attendants at the departure airport know the rules of Thai visa and I just want peace of mind. To me, that is $16 well spent.

If the person on check in doesn't know the rules regarding Visas you ask to speak to the flight supervisor

… and make a fuzz? I have better things to do than teaching flight attendants.

The purpose of a non-O visa is to live in Thailand. There should be no requirement at all to show proof of leaving Thailand. That is only a requirement for tourist travel.
