Will onward tickets to Malaysia be acceptable for entry into Thailand with a 30-day visa exemption?

We have one way tickets to Thailand later this month. Initially we were going to apply for the Non-O while still in the US so I bought cheap onward tickets to Malaysia for October (within 90 days). But we decided to wait and get the Non-O once we get there. My question is, will our onward tickets for October be acceptable based on the fact we’ll get 30 days visa exempt upon arrival and could apply for extensions once we’re in the country? My backup plan will be to buy the cheap outward tickets right before we fly out.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether their onward tickets to Malaysia will suffice for entry into Thailand under the 30-day visa exemption. Several commenters have highlighted that airlines may require proof of onward travel within 30 days, even if the user plans to apply for a Non-O visa in Thailand later. There's a consensus that while Thai Immigration may not be a problem, boarding the flight could pose challenges if the airline demands proof of onward travel. Additional discussions revolve around the differences in applying for a Non-O visa in Thailand versus from the USA and personal experiences with entrance on one-way tickets.

It's really up to how well trained the airline check in clerk is. If their trained in overseas travel and they see your on a one way, they will ask about onward travel after visa exception days.

it's the airlines that might be the problem when it comes to a one way ticket. It's not Thai Immigration at the airports

I flew from USA in November and was not asked by airline or anyone else about my onward ticket.

I did have one just in case

And I applied once I arrived in Thailand 🇹🇭

The only difference as I understand it is that when applying for non-o in Thailand you need the 800k in Thai bank at application time and it can be a challenge to get a bank to give you an account without the non-o and a residency certificate.

When applying in your own country you just need to show a bank account with the 800k (about $22kusd) in your home country Bank (or evidence of 65k income). You'll then have to get it into a Thai bank 60 days prior to applying for your first 1yr extension (30 days after your non-o is approved).

Everything else is the same.

My personal situation requires a bit more documentation for the online application. Nothing too difficult, just kind of a hassle.

I was told you had to apply for the non -o while still in United States? I am planning on moving in December 2024. Which is it> Can I come with just my passport, get an agent when I get there and apply for non-o there?

We initially thought about Hua Hin but then decided on Jomtien, near Pattaya. So many beautiful areas to choose 😊

I agree, I don't listen about not hiring an agent. I am 77. It will be easier for me to use an agent. I do not want any hassle's. Actually I will be using a law firm. I plan on buying a condo, and will need them, then. I will rent for two or three months then buy. Good Luck to you. I am planning on Hua Hin.

Yes, you can do that. And that’s what my husband and I will be doing. You’ll hear many people tell you not to waste money on an agent. But it’s totally up to you as an individual how you want to handle getting your retirement visa.

Personally, I felt the hoops I had to jump through to apply online was slightly more involved than going to Thailand and applying for the visa there. But that’s my own personal opinion.

Nope. You'll need onward travel within 30days. I doubt Thai Immigration would be your problem. Boarding your flight will be the biggest problem

No

You might risk that your airline will ask for or require an onward ticket within the initial 30 days for visa exemption arrivals, regardless of if you’re entitled to do a 30 days local extension later.

I think that’s true. When we flew in December for a 45-day trip, the airline (Korean) wanted to see our tourist visa but we also had a round trip ticket so the return travel was covered. I expect I’ll be buying the onward ticket the morning of our flight.

It's a bit more than a "might", airlines are super strict on correct travel documentation these days!

A non-O doesn't require any onward ticket so you wouldn't have needed it for that.

Normally for proof of onward travel you will need to show a ticket out of Thailand within the number of days you'll receive when you arrive. If you're traveling without a visa that is 30 days.

Normally it will be your airline that asks if anyone does, so you should confirm with you airline what their requirement is for traveling without a visa to Thailand.

Also you should get the non-O before traveling to Thailand as it will be basically impossible for you to open the bank account you'll need in order to convert to the non-O visa in Thailand. So you'll be forced to pay an agent to open a bank account for you if you don't arrive with the non-O visa. It should be relatively easy to open a bank account yourself if you already have the non-O visa from the embassy.

Tree PlantNo return or onward ticket is needed when applying for a 90-days Non-immigrant O visa based on for example retirement or marriage.

Actually, yes, I did need an onward ticket for applying online for the Non-O which is why I bought a cheap one way ticket to KL in October. Otherwise I wouldn’t have bought one that far out from arriving in Thailand.
