TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa is not considered a form of residency in Thailand; it is characterized as a long-term tourist visa, allowing for extended stays but not permanent residency or citizenship. Users have noted that it acts like a multi-entry visa that can be renewed, yet its status does not provide a basis for applying for visas in other countries, with some indicating exceptions depending on the specific country.

I emailed Japan and Germany embassy in Bangkok, and they said I can apply for visa here while on DTV. For the U.S., i think you can apply anywhere regardless of residency location.

I think they meant applying with your passport not the DTV

Some visas you can only apply in your home country or where you have long term visa/residency ie a Burmese could not apply for a Schengen Visa while in Thailand on a tourist visa - in face most non-Thais could not.

@Greg *******
understood

@Greg *******
do you know if other nationalities can apply Schengen visa whilst in Thailand?

@Tammi ****
If they hold certain visa types. Have a look on the VFS website - it has the info. A lot of visas are outsourced to VFS these days. UK is and quite a few others
Felipe *********
No, it's a long term tourist visa only.
Greg ********
I think it depends on the particular country and visa. I saw a post someone applied for UK Visa on DTV and got it. I may be wrong but I think Schengen could not. Check through the posts in the group
Nick *******
@Greg *******
they may have had a DTV but it won’t have had any bearing on whether they were successful for UK visa
Greg ********
@Nick ******
I am not saying that. I am saying whether they can actually apply in Thailand on that visa. For example you need to be "Resident" in Thailand to apply for the Schengen here.

@Greg *******
ok sorry misunderstood

NP. Its like if you were here on a holiday visa you cannot apply for Schengen in most cases. You have to be on certain visas.

@Greg *******
Makes zero difference to ability to be successful. Passport nationality, job status, income and past travel history are key criteria.

I see reading comprehension is once again beyond your ken! We are discussing the ability to even apply for a visa on particular visa types. Not the qualifying criteria FFS
Expat **********
@Greg *******
ffs. 🤦. Can you actually read ?

Anyone can apply for a visa on any passport or visa type. The answer is no, DTV isn’t a residency and it makes no difference as to APPLYING for anything. “You saw a post” thanks for that brilliant intellectual insight to the discussion.
John **********
No it's not. You can't use the DTV as the basis to apply for a visa elsewhere
James ********
@John *********
but having it does not preclude applying for a visa in other countries for that countries visas.

No it’s not considered a residency. It’s a essentially a glorified 5 year tourist visa that allows stays up yo 180 days with the possibility of renew for another 180 days.
Barry ******
Temporary residency.

Residency usually refers to permanent residence or citizenship
Felipe *********
@Barry *****
not even that, it's a tourist visa in fact.
James ********
@Felipe ********
correct ✅
Barry ******
Everyone that isn't a permanent resident or citizen is a tourist. Some just stay longer than others
