TLDR : Answer Summary
Applying for the DTV visa in Thailand does indeed invalidate your existing visa, as individuals cannot hold two visas simultaneously. To apply for the DTV, one must either cancel their existing visa through the issuing embassy or utilize their current visa to enter Thailand and then leave without a re-entry permit before applying for the DTV.

if you travel less than 2 times a year prob don’t do dtv. A lot of people bounce between countries in SEA and have the time to do so as well.

yeh but still money has not much liquidity and could be invested outside at a higher rate of return

from my little understanding, with the monthly income method of 65k on retirement/40k Marriage extensions, once that monthly income has arrived in the Thai bank account, it can then be sent back overseas to earn higher rate of return.

65k is still a lot of money a month. In Thailand. What if you already got a house and don’t do much. I’ve seen people live on 25k comfortably (for one person)

the 65k can be recycled if it's too much for your lifestyle

they don't have to spend it, just have it coming to their bank account 🤦🏻‍♂️

Overall it’s just the stability of 5 years for most of the visas above.

Each one is different here. For retirement just an example. You got money tied to thai bank account with little interest and weak currency that’s for one. You wanna have the hassle of extending it every year compared to just a bus down to Cambodia. You have peace of mind for 5 years instead of each year a new extension/visa process Etc. too many to list. But I would say money is the first one

The money is not "tied" if you use the 65k monthly transfers from year 2 as most people would do

The DTV suits retirees who travel a lot as I do. I will still transfer 80k each month which I do now, that's no problem, but as I'm in and out of Thailand like a yo-yo there's no compulsion for me to be present in Thailand at "extension time". There's no trips to immigration every 12 months which is a plus, and the DTV pays for itself. At the moment I pay 3800 baht per year for re-entry permit plus 1900 baht per year for extension, so 5700 per year over five years is

baht, compared to

baht for DTV. So I look on it as being paid

not to have to visit immigration! It's a no-brainer

how much does a borderrun cost? As you probably have to stay at least one day

I've no idea what a border run costs. There's no charge to re-enter Thailand, so I guess it's whatever the bouncing country charges?

Yes

You cannot apply for the DTV if you have a visa already because you cannot have 2 visas at one time. You would either need to contact the embassy that issued the visa to get it cancelled, or you would need to enter Thailand and use the visa, and then exit Thailand without a re-entry permit when you go to apply for the DTV.
