Is 55,000 baht for an ED 1 year visa a good price?

I would love to do volunteering or even work a small part time job to get a 1 year visa, but I’m not sure how.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The cost of an ED visa for 55,000 baht is considered high by some community members, especially when options for cheaper alternatives exist. Comments suggest that prices can range from 32,000 to 47,000 baht depending on the school and included services. Discussions also highlight concerns regarding the legitimacy of volunteer visas and potential scams within visa services, encouraging applicants to choose reputable language schools. It is noted that a legal visa extension costs approximately 1,900 to 2,000 baht each time, differing significantly from the higher upfront costs of ED visas.

Most long term expats who seriously want to learn Thai study on YouTube, ask a gf/bf, ask a few questions while drinking beers, etc. If you want a visa, do what you need to do. Many people on here who criticize for not going to a proper language school have only lived in Thailand for 1-3 years and haven't been burned yet. Beware of the newbies.
Per-e ***************
What exactly did you do in those four hours of studying? Listening to a lecture won't improve your fluency.

Bruce *********
@Perry **************
you are wrong. Study on YouTube over a proper School? You have to be joking.
Per-e ***************
@Bruce ********
Did your language school help you speak Thai like a local? I doubt it. Its more like this: "Here are the phrases you'll need when ordering food at a restaurant...." 😂
Bruce *********
@Perry **************
they help teach you the proper way to speak and not the use of any slang if that's what you're implying.
Per-e ***************
@Bruce ********
If you want to be fluent you need to study and put your time in. A few hours a week at a language school won't do much. The technology to upload data in our brains doesn't exist yet. I look at language schools as an accessory.
Bruce *********
@Perry **************
though I may not speak it as well as someone who has lived here for a long time without any formal classes, my grammar is already a whole lot better than those people who have been learning on the streets or from a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Bruce *********
@Perry **************
so you're saying studying 3 hours in class plus an an additional 1 hour outside of class isn't enough?
Bruce *********
I would be very careful with paying everything up front. I signed up with Duke University which is a great school but I failed my ministry of education test after three courses. I was taking off the Ed visa and had to go with the covid-19 extension which was a one-time thing for me. I now have to leave the country after March 24th and Duke University will not reimburse me for the classes I cannot take in person.

If I had to do it all over again I would just sign up for individual classes and just keep extending my Ed Visa as is needed.

@Bruce ********
They told me nobody fails the tests 😯
Bruce *********
@Mela ********
well we all know that isn't correct now. I signed a one-year lease for apartments and now I have to leave the country with 6 months left on my lease. What's horrible is I sold all my belongings back in the United States to move here. And now after 6 months I have to move back. Car and everything.

@Bruce ********
you can do a short trip 2 Cambodia, come back with a tourist visa and get another ED or whatever here.
Bruce *********
@Anton *************
I'm thinking about going to Vietnam for a few weeks when they open up their borders on March 15th. I'm just glad I do have options but I sure wish that they would do the covid extension again . Regardless so it's still be nice to go out of Bangkok or I mean Thailand for a little bit

@Bruce ********
did you book a trip yet? Are you on an ED visa as well? Might be a solution for you to try.
Bruce *********
@Fahad ******
I failed the ministry of education test so they canceled my Ed Visa within 5 months of me signing up even though I paid for a whole year up front. They refuse to refund the unused classes that I will never use.

I fly out to Cambodia this Wednesday for 2 weeks

hi :) marriage visa if you have thai spouse, or guardian visa if you have thai child or retirement visa if you are over 50 years old, if you want to study in Thailand university will help you with visas and that definitely not cost 50k bath. Other option is muay thai class they can assist with visa also. Cheers

Your options are limited sometimes depending on your current visa. Plus if you are not able to get another COVID extension, you're just about out of time.

Steve Demir. “Under the table” Volunteer visas are no longer available. Legit organisation’s can still apply, but agents can’t.

if you're getting an Non-o volunteer visa from a legit organization, they will provide the documents and you have to get out of the country to process it by yourself...

sorry I don’t know that answer. It changed when a new head of immigration was appointed recently. Whether they may return is speculation.

If you're actually studying the visa costs a fraction of that.

And if you're going to stay here long term, you might as well use that money to learn the language.

A volonteer visa (through agents, not legit ones) cost 35-55k and are much better than ED visas, since you don't have to go to immigration and extend the visa every 3 months, like you have to do with an ED visa.
Chulala **********
@Steve ******
do you know Valonteer visa are fake visa now how do you recommend that fake visa?

I didn't recommend a fake visa. I recommended he uses his money to study Thai.

is the best option. I walked out of there after 4 months and was speaking enough Thai to be able to keep learning by myself and got to a fluent level in a year.
Michael ********
How many lessons does that include and in what subject.
Jonas *************
Well, yes if you fail you can take private lessons to catch up to be able to continue, typically.

Sadly enough I need to start over because I studied Thai 2 months but then we had locked down and I didn't use it for a year cuz it was no but it's high I could speak to so I forgot most of it.
Jonas *************
Find a real school. They kick you out if you don't turn up or fail....
