This discussion revolves around obtaining a 12-month education visa for language studies in Thailand. It covers the associated costs, which are estimated around 15,000 THB to set up, plus ongoing fees for extensions. Various options for extending stay after the initial visa, including renewing the ED visa, changing to a work visa, or pursuing permanent residency are also explored. Participants share insights on the duration limits for language study visas and confirm that holders of an ED visa cannot work. Recommendations for language schools and general advice for prospective students are included.

And on that note I believe we're done. The O/P evidently found a way to facilitate their stay in thailand.

I dunno what schools you go to but I can't think of any that are 15K baht a month except those visa mill schools. I am almost certain it's a visa mill school you're referring to because extensions at the immigration office cost 1900baht NOT 5000baht which means your using a school that pays under the table to let their students get 90 days.

It might be handy if there was ever a 12 month ED Visa to start with.

The multi-entry non imm ED visa used to cost about 5000bt but I dont think they're avaliable anymore. The single entry visa is about 2000bt, with
*****
day extentions of stay costing 1900bt for each extention

Just further to this.. after the 12 months is over what happens next in terms of your stay there..are you able to get a more permanent stay..taking into consideration you have spent 12 months learning the language
are you sure it’s 3 years? My school said that it’s now only 1-1.5 years depending on when you first enrolled. I know things change frequently but is 3 years the latest guidance? This was 4-5 months ago. School was kpt in phangan.
if you have an Ed visa you are not allowed to work on an Ed visa....you are not allowed to work on the Retirement and Tourist Visas either...the only visas you can work on are the Work Visa and the Smart Visa....

Thanks for reply jeremy, does that allow you to work out there in jobs that foreigners are allowed to work in?

no permanent residence stay at all.
You can either get a second 1 year Ed visa, you get 3 years in one Subject [i.e., Study the Thai Language]. you get 10 years overall but no longer than 3 years in 1 subject [i.e., 3 years Thai, 3 years Thai Cooking, 3 Years Muay Thai, 1 Year French...etc.]
get a job and that Visa
do border bounces with the 30-day visa-free exemption,
60 Day SETV, 6-month METV
Get Married and obtain that visa
Hit 50 and apply for a Retirement Visa
or if you have the money buy the 5-20 year Elite Visa
Rate for the new 4 year Smart Visa
Any of the above you can do without first getting the Ed visa

FYI most language schools will allow you to do 1 free session with them...so go around and sit in a few classes at a few schools to see which one benefits you the best...

25,000-45,000 depending on the school, location and if you want to do extra courses to study...

I think about 32k. I picked up a leaflet from Rawai Language School a while ago - it's on the corner of Soi SaiYuan 12. Turn left out of our road onto Soi Samakki 2 then left at the end opposite 7-11 and its just up the road on the right hand side
