TLDR : Answer Summary
Australian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days at a time when arriving by air, with no official limit on the number of entries within a year. However, frequent entries without sufficient time out of Thailand may raise suspicions of visa misuse, leading to possible questioning by immigration officers or even denial of entry based on entry history.

I think it's more about continuity of staying in Thailand than the number of actual entries. If you are genuinely in and out with significant time out, then no limit. If you border bounce with no obvious means of financial support, they are going to think you are working in Thailand.

The system at the borders (the airports especially) flags your passport after 4 to 6 visa exempt entries. It doesn't take into consideration the amount of time between them or of they were back-2-back or anything. It's the immigration officers job to look at those details and decide whether to question you or not.

That's why some people can skate thru without a problem and others get the grilling by the officer.

There is no official limit to 30 day visa exempt entries by air in any specific amount of time. IF your entry history flags in the system you will get pulled aside and talked to, told you need a visa, asked for proof of funds or worst case denied entry.
