TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the ambiguous nature of Thailand's visa exemption policy, specifically regarding how many times one can enter the country under this exemption. Contributors share their recent experiences at immigration, highlighting that entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Key points include the need for proof of funds, accommodation, and a return ticket, as well as the recent trend of stricter scrutiny at border checks. Many express frustration over the lack of clear guidelines and fear of being denied entry. The general consensus is that staying longer than 90 days in a 6-month period may lead to complications. Some users report success with multiple entries while also noting others' difficulties, stressing the importance of being well-prepared before entering Thailand.
With people being turned around by immigration, I got paranoid. So thought I'd get a multiple entry visa because I want to spend Xmas in thailand with thai friends. Firstly the requirements are to have proof of flight then apply for visa. This I did, then fill in the forms correctly, without screen shots. Now I'm still waiting for a visa number a week later and my flight is a few days away, I've paid my £150 for the visa,I've tried email and phoning the embassy without any response from them. The system is terrible, it's more like a scam. I don't think the visa I've paid for will come through and now I risk being refused entry by some jumped up immigration officer because I spent last Xmas and new year in thailand and Laos, if I'm refused, then I lose the money I spent on the flight plus I'll have to buy another flight. I'll also lose the money I've paid for hotel accommodation. Does thailand expect a tourist can see the whole of the country in 60 days,I've been going on and off for the past 25 years, normally for a month at a time, 2 or 3 times a year. I'm a poor pensioner, have no intention of living or working there, it's just my choice of a relaxing holiday destination.
it took me 2 hours of trying . redial redial visa people only there between 2 p.m - 4 p.m

UPDATE !!!!! I have spoke to the London embassy today .. still a minefield..
You can still travel on the 60 day tourist visa . Even if you have been this year a couple of times .
Providing you have no previous problems with immigration.
And must be able show return tickets and proof of where you are staying .
And prove you have money to support yourself . By the sounds of things if you have done visa runs over the border and back in the past that could present problems.
But I have been told to regularly check the website because things could change
How long was each trip ? Also , did the embassy say proof of accommodation needed to be for the duration of your trip or just the first few days ?

I think the Visas for Thailand are a minefield.

I am moving there next January and think I will just need to give everything to an agent or my head will explode!

Multiple means multiple. There is no number attached to it. It's deliberately ambiguous. Whether you are denied entry is down to the immigration officer on duty, but your chances of being denied entry are obviously increased if you don't have the correct visa. Having said that, I doubt you would be denied entry as long as everything else is above board. But following anyones advice off Facebook is not always the best. The Thai E Visa website "should" help you get the correct information and visa.
the evisa site has nothing to do with Visa exempt entries.
The evisa site and embassies are Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Thai immigration is Ministry of the Interior.

Ok, I'm no expert, so point taken. Just thought it may be useful if you're over the 60 day visa exempt entry status and have multiple entries. Facebook advice, including mine, is not always the best way to go.

James that is brilliant! And oh so true! 😂 But I honestly feel they'll lose potential tourists to nearby countries, that allow easier entry! Cambodia,Lao,and the Philippines! Plus all aforementioned are cheaper!

As properly diagnosed earlier, Thailand will be able to send a mission to the Mars before it is able to hammer out a clear visa scheme.

its fine, as long as you can prove your stay, funds and outbound ticket, having gaps in going to thailand is fine, its more so if those gaps are 2days in vietnam every couple months is what will raise suspicion.
No replies to my many emails and cannot get through to the embassy in London by phone. Useless! We go to Hua Hin twice a year for 90 days at a time so I think my best option is to apply for a Retirement Visa as I have done so in the past.
Nationals of the United Kingdom and over 40 other countries are eligible to travel to Thailand, for tourism purpose, with the exemption of visa and are permitted to stay in Thailand for a period of not exceeding 30 days. Therefore, you do not need a visa.
Mark *******
You're correct on not requiring a visa, but incorrect on the period of stay in Thailand. That is definitely 6O days presently. Did this on three occasions recently,in
It may say that but it is wrong, typical of many Embassy websites not being updated

On Monday I witnessed at suvarnabhumi airport people being denied entry, reasons given were that with a visa exemption you are allowed to stay 90 days within 6 months, plus you need three things to show: 10k baht, proof of accommodation for entire stay, and return ticket booked. This is what they told every person waiting with me, British, American, Russians, Chinese, they were sending back loads of people and it was just a couple days ago
Mark *******
" Proof of accommodation for entire stay?" But it has been stated it is just the initial few days! More ambiguity! Clear as mud! Come on Thai Immigration please clear up the whole process! I suspect they don't want to; and that can be to the tourist's advantage!
we were all standing in an enclosed area together, some officers were standing by helping people fill out forms while they went 1 by 1 to interview next door, they officers standing around were giving people information
it was on the right side by the priority immigration desk, they set up a cornered area with those retractable belts used to queue, felt like a chicken pen, separated only by a not so high wall were the officers had desks and computers behind us, I was being questioned coming in as well, I'm not sure of each persons exact situation but they were verbally telling people while filling in forms that they won't be allowed in, and the kept repeating the same reason, didn't matter the person's nationality, they were questioning everyones reason for using the visa exemption, kept saying you need proof of accommodation for your entire trip, 10k baht, and return ticket, telling people that you can only use the visa exemption for 90 days every 6 months, this is what happened, I was held there for 6 hours, they were denying people entry, or telling people to get the correct visa and try again
i have a complex situation as I'm changing schools, I told them my situation, but I was denied entry, and told to apply for a tourist visa instead, and then after that I would be able to get the non b in Thailand, some people were let through and I'm thinking if I didn't tell them I was going to start a job I would have maybe been okay, another guy came on a Ed visa, and because he spoke Thai with them they denied entry saying he doesn't need Thai classes, sent him back to Europe, I was sent to Cambodia
me personally they pulled aside once I gave my passport to the immigration officer to be stamped in, a supervisor was called and they weren't happy with my answer and then took me to the chicken pen
Ah OK, I misunderstood , I thought this happened before immigration. I didn't realise you had reached immigration desk and handed over your passport. I thought it was a kind of pre-check before reaching the immigration desks.
I totally agree , if they were to put a definitive amount of days allowed in a certain amount of time on visa exempt it would be clearer . Everyone would know where they stand , even the I.O'S . It would also save them additional work because less people would attempt to break or bend the rules. If someone attempted to break the rules they deserve to be denied .
waste of time for everybody and rolling the dice every single time people go thru immigration. This would be great in weeding out all those illegal workers coming in and out all the time.

This is why people are now going Vietnam and Cambodia never clear in Thailand

If I have had 3 @60 day visa exemptions but did not stay the full 60 days each time within 12 months, would it be ok to have a 6 month break & get another visa
Tony *********
I go every 9-10 weeks and stay 3 weeks through out the year and stay 6 weeks at Xmas time . Never been questioned. Done this since end of 2021

Planning to be 5 months in Thailand in the next 6 months, first trip this month for 59 days, and the second 3 weeks after i left. Main plain is visa exemption for the first trip and exemption plus extension for the second (around 89 days). Before i leave i will try to contact my embassy asking if i should be ok with this or for the second trip a single entry visa would be more adequate. I will always have an onward ticket, for the second trip probably the best is an adjustable fare showing a 60 day return but adaptable to change after i ask for the extension. I hope all this goes well, i have no history of border bounces, usually 2 months a year in Thailand.

I hold a full UK passport.

This is all so confusing! I stayed in Thailand from June 2nd 2024 until 10th February 2025. A total of 254 days if my maths is correct! I visited Jomtien Immigration for an extra 60 days in early July, did three border runs end of August,October, and December, obtaining 60 days on each occasion. This being a total of 254 days. All achieved on visa exemption. I had no difficulty whatsoever. I was told by Thai Visa Service whom I booked with, that one is permitted 3 border runs a year. And I do know there is no limitations if travelling by air. I really do wish an actual expert whom is schooled in Immigration law would clarify the rules once and for all. Not just those whom are not experts, and only judge on their own experiences. I dearly love Thailand and I know the country values it's tourism industry very valuably. Since it receives a vast income from tourism. But this ambiguity could put potential tourists off,and tempt visitors to Cambodia,Laos, and the Philippines. All which are far more welcoming, less bureaucratic, and easier to enter. It never used to be this way,and a report I read recently by the TAT,cited that due to a decrease in tourists to Thailand already, many were looking elsewhere. I want/intend to visit Thailand again shortly, but confess I'm looking elsewhere. Morroco seems enticingly welcoming and attractive!
But they have to obey the law, especially being government officials! And Thailand needs
tourism big time!

But the visa exemption policy is still legal! And as I repeat continually one can fly into Thailand with no limit,as stated in their law.
Money talks big time in Thailand as we all are aware! As for following the dice, that's life in general isn't it...!? 😂

You can come until you can't... In other words, its literally down to the discretion of the IO/supervising IO every time you try to enter even with a TRV/METV. As long as you don't have a sketchy history you should be fine but I would make sure you meet all the requirements such as 20k cash, on-wards flight etc

No one is going to answer that, especially the embassy, it is up to the specific immigration officer in front of you. You are safer if you have a visa
any address is fine. Also if questioned maintain you're a tourist

Literally no one can tell you how many. Each entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer you are standing in front of. Recently people have been getting pulled out of line at the airport and interrogated if they've done a single 60 day entry with 30 day extension and then leave and try to return. Generally it seems like if you've spent 90 days in Thailand, they expect you to be gone more than 90 days before returning. "
The number of times you've entered Thailand doesn't really matter, it's about how much time you've been in Thailand. More than 6 months in the last year and you're asking for trouble. More than 3 months in the last 6 months, and you're also asking for trouble. Get a real visa if you want to spend more time than that in Thailand.
I assume you are talking about visa exempt entries only . I entered Thailand in mid January on an METV , stayed 33 days , I am going back next week for 6 weeks on the same METV , which should be OK right ?
If you've only been in Thailand for 33 days and left then yes you will be fine. But the METV isn't a golden ticket. There have been multiple reports of people who got an METV, entered Thailand for 60+30 days, left and returned for 60+30, and then just before the visa expires they left and returned again. At this point they were stopped, pulled out of line and interrogated as they have already spent 6 months in Thailand as a tourist.
Thank you . I've just calculated 55 days in the last 6 months . 70 days in total In the last 11 months . That's not including the upcoming trip obviously.
OK, thanks . I've spent a total of 70 days in Thailand in the last year , 1 12 day visa exempt , 20 day visa exempt then 33 days METV , my METV is valid until end of June, like I said I arrive next week for 6 weeks . Which in total will be 120 days in Thailand in total over a period of 13 months .
