Will I face issues entering Thailand for 53 days without a visa if I plan to travel outside the country first?

Good morning all,

I am flying into Bangkok from New York City at the end of August from New York and will be staying in Thailand for 53 days. Will immigration at the airport in Bangkok let me in if I tell them that I will be traveling outside of Thailand during my stay ? Or is it easier and safer to get a 60 day tourist visa beforehand?

Thank you for any and all help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to stay in Thailand for 53 days and is contemplating whether they will be allowed entry without a visa, since they intend to travel to Cambodia or Vietnam temporarily during their stay. Responses suggest that as long as the user has an onward ticket (either established before departure or upon request at check-in), they should face no significant issues either with the airline in New York City or immigration in Thailand. Acquiring a single-entry tourist visa for 60 days is also suggested as an alternative to avoid complications.

Sorry I didn't read all the replies. You may want to concern about the airlines allowing on the flight from NY. That's the larger concern - Thailand is all to happy to have infrequent tourist. You should be ok but ... the visa exempt is for 30 days.

Okay, IF you already have your round trip ticket to thailand with the arrival departure spaced out over 53 days you're FINE. You won't have a problem boarding the flight in the US because you have onward travel (even though it's not within 30 days they aren't going to say anything to you about it) AND you're not going to be asked anything entering thailand because the passport stamping people at passport control know you can get an extension of stay for 30 days IF you want to. AND when you exit the country to go to Cambodia you're not going to be asked anything when you stamp back into thailand on a new 30 day vsia exempt entry, and even if you were you have onward travel back to the US.

Good Morning Tod and thank you for the prompt reply . But, I was planning on leaving Thailand for a few days to say Cambodia or Vietnam before my 30 day visa exempt stamp ran out. Then, once i returned to Bangkok I would have a new 30 day visa stamp, thus eliminating the need to get the 60 day tourist visa. Would this work ?

wherever you can get it. I think either would be fine.

. Good idea, thank you. You mean from the embassy or consulate site ?

@Arthur *******
Just an idea, but you might print out (save to your phone) the visa exemption rules that show your plan will work. That might help.

. I guess it just depends on luck of the draw with who you get upon checking in. Im sure most staff dont know the visa rules.

It has been a few years. I want to say it was back on the AA/JAL route (not Cathay Pacific)

hello
@Karen *********
, what airline did you fly from dallas?
Karen **********
Just confirming that I was stopped by airline staff in Dallas (US) regarding my 35 day visit to Thailand w/o a visa. I had a hotel booking in Langkawi, Malaysia set for mid-trip. After being passed to the staff supervisor, I was cleared to board.

a multi-entry tourist visa lets you stay in thailand for almost 9 months (in 60 day increments), all you'd need is a single entry tourist visa and they cost US$40

haha sorry for the confusion. I already purchased my roundtrip ticket with Cathay Pacific from JFK to Bkk and BKK to JFK. I have not gotten a visa yet nor have I purchased a ticket to leave Thailand before my 30 days are up while I am in Thailand. Again, sorry for the confusion guys.

Hahahah the confusion
Ellie *******
I thought he already purchased return ticket...

I thought you said tou didnt have a visa but you said you already purchased a 60 day? Uhhhhhhh what
Ellie *******
All horror stories of being denied boarding I heard here are so far of someone without return (or outbound) ticket and without any visa...

@Ellie ******
, just heard some horror stories in the past and wanted to check with you guys.

I doubt airline staff would give you any trouble at check-in in NYC if you already have return ticket..

Yes, I already have purchased it . So, it seems that my major obstacle will be the the check in agent in NYC and it should be smooth sailing with Thai immigration in Bangkok.

@Arthur *******
you just looked at the wrong pricing :/ NO 60 day single entry tourist visa costs 200USD, that's a 6 month multi-entry one
Michael ********
Single entry tourist visa would only be about 40 usd. You could get that an get a re-entry permit on the way out.... anyway theres lots of choices lol

like with bangkok air or air asia?
Ellie *******
As long as you have return ticket within 60 days, I don't think you would get any problem..

ah ok ok. I guess i should try to call the airline but then it depends on whoever i get at the check in counter. Just checked the consulate and they are charging 200usd for a 60 day multiple entry tourist visa. So, I definitely want to avoid that .
Michael ********
You could also just buy an ‘open ticket’ where you can change the date of the flight after arrive in Thailand.
Michael ********
Happend at home in Aus. I wouldnt worry about it, I have heard of other people who were asked and just booked a flight on there phone at the checkin counter and all is ok.

Im not sure when and where i want to travel yet i.e. cambodia or vietnam. So i dont want to be forced to buy the ticket ahead of time, if possible. Micheal
@Michael *******
, this happened to you in your home country or the states?
Michael ********
When it happend to me at the airport checkin counter I came back 5 mins later with a booked flight confirmation and all was well.

So, in essence they can deny me boarding ?
Michael ********
They may ask to see a ticket out of thailand within 30 days if you are flying in without a visa. But I would suggest trying to check in first if you dont have a flight out already. If they ask you about it, you can book a cheap ticket then and there with air asia to KL (or another super cheap destination)

Thank you so much guys. One more question. Will I have any problem with the Cathay Air check in agent at JFK because I dont have the proper visa for my amount of stay in Thailand ?
Tod *********
yep
@Art***
, that will work fine.
Michael ********
Once you leave Thailand your current visa exempt will be canceled/finished. If you only stay 22 days it does not matter you get stamped out when you leave.

When you fly back in after however long you will get a new visa exempt stamp.
Tod *********
You won't have a problem with passport control stamping into the country.

I'd say it's easier to get a single entry tourist visa which would stamp you in for 60 days. That way you don't have to go to the immigration office for a 30 day extension for 1900baht like you would if you entered on a 30 day visa exempt stamp.
