Hey all. Quick question. I plan to travel to Thailand, enter on Mar 26th on a Non-O 90 day (marriage visa) I will opt for multi entry as I have some illness in the family and might need to fly back, sadly. Then 60 days later (May 25th) I will apply for my marriage visa. How long does this process take it your experience? Do I have to surrender my passport at this point? I will be applying where we live in Nonthaburi. And can I leave the country while this process is underway? (If itโs not approved by then and I donโt have to surrender my passport.) I have a 3 day work opportunity in Bali, Jun 19th.
Many thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to enter Thailand on a Non-O 90-day marriage visa with a multi-entry option due to family illness. They intend to apply for a marriage visa 60 days later and seek clarity on the processing time, the need to surrender their passport, and their ability to travel abroad during the application period, specifically for a work opportunity in Bali. Responses from the community clarify that to maintain the 90-day visa, a re-entry permit can be obtained and that a yearly extension of stay is what should be applied for instead of a marriage visa. They also note that the passport does not need to be surrendered, and travel is possible with proper coordination with immigration.

thanks for helping Peter. When I apply for the yearly extension and go under consideration for 30 days is that a walk in/first come first served deal? Or a pre booked appointment. (Iโm out of the city in Nonthaburi)
So you will enter on a single entry 90 day Non-O visa that you get from a thai consulate in your country.
Then as you need to travel during those 90 days you said you will buy a multiple re-entry permit at the immigration office here OR at the airport when you leave (keep in mind the re-entry permit will be valid only for the 90 days you get stamped in for, but it will let you exit/re-enter without losing that 90 day stamp).
When you have 30 days or less left on your current 90 day stamp you would apply not for a marriage visa ๐ฎ (as you already have the Non-O visa) you would be applying for a yearly extension of stay for 1900baht
Once you apply you will get a 30 day under consideration stamp. You CAN leave the country on this stamp BUT you need a new re-entry permit (which is valid only for that 30 day stamp).
It goes without saying you have to be back in country by the time that 30 day stamp expires because you show up at the immigration office on that date and get the year extension inked in
And no, you don't surrender your passport at all, you hold it thru the whole process. You will need to coordinate with them if they are going to do a home visit during the 30 day under consideration stamp and your travel plans.
Hi Todd. Thanks for getting back to me about this, and thanks for clearing up some errors in my question.
This all sounds good. So under my time estimate. Iโll get the 30 day under consideration stamp on May 26th. (This I do at my local immigration office? Do I make an appointment in advance? Or just turn up as early as possible and join the queue.)
The year extension linked in date would then be June 24th. (presuming all is approved, which it should be.)
So the home visit is a surprise drop in? Or they give you a date, because as you mention, I plan to travel away for 3 of 30 days, so I would notify them of this and they would hopefully be ok with working around that?
Many thanks again for your help.

you need to ask the immigration officer when you apply for your extension if they're going to do a home visit and you need to tell them you're going to be out of town
You also need to get a re-entry permit if you're traveling during that under consideration period so you keep that stamp "alive"
As far as the under consideration stamp there's no wiggle room and you have to be back IN thailand at the immigration office on that date or you lose the extension
