TLDR : Answer Summary
The 6-month multi-entry visa for Thailand allows for multiple 60-day entries; however, it is important to note that the visa is valid for 6 months from the issuance date. Upon entering Thailand, you receive a 60-day stamp. Before that expires, you can apply for a 30-day extension. To maximize your time in Thailand, you must exit the country and re-enter to receive a new 60-day stamp. Many travelers successfully extend their stay to nearly 9 months by managing their entries and exits appropriately.

and I actually believe we've gone over the advantages and how to get the most time in country out of a 6 month METV.
I can't see anything more to be gained.
Good Luck to the O/P. We're done...

Consider a couple of years under a Multi Entry Tourist Visa (6 months using a series of 60 days stays and 30 day extensions - the 6 months can be stretched to 9 with proper management
how about we wait until you actually HAVE a 6 month METV in your passport and get stamped into thailand on the first 60 day stamp before you start stressing out on how to wring the maximum time out of it? ;)
, getting 30 day extensions on each entry does NOT increase the amount of time you get off the visa. The ONLY extension that matters is the 30 day one on the final entry.

Unless you only stay out 1 day each time, you'd be hard-pressed to make it to that third entry if you extend the first two and use to their max potential.
The final entry has to be on or before the "enter before" or "must be utilized" date on the VISA. It doesn't matter what your entry stamp says.
Here's an example in this visa the last entry would have to have been done on or before the 12 Jan 2017 for them to get another 60 day stamp.

Once you get past that 'enter before' date on the visa, It's done. Finished. Can't be used again. If you enter just before that date, you get another 60 day stamp, but the visa itself is finished. The stamps you get on entry are your 'permission to stay' in Thailand (the date on those is the last day you can stay until), which can be extended, once, at an immigration office inside the country.
, thanks for the great explanation. Just to clarify one step further: the final entry of an METV must be before the end of the validity date listed on the visa? Or is that the date only the first entry must be made by?
Just wanted to clarify this since it wasn’t addressed. 🙂

I’m not seeing where anyone’s answered this guy’s OP question, which was about the need to enter/exit vs. report...

Okay, I hope we now all understand the visa doesn't "activate on arrival" :O The visa is VALID for 6 months from the date it's issued and you start losing time off it the second you get it. That's why
said to get it as close to the time you're going to come here as you can. That way you don't burn the validity of the visa down not being here ;)
You get unlimited 60 day entries to thailand on the visa for it's validity and most people can wring close to 9 months of stay out of it (in 60 day increments and by extending the last entry by 30 days).

Good morning Tod and thank you for validating the advice I gave to the OP while Thailand was sleeping. :-)
Try to get your visa as close to the time you leave for Thailand. Issue date. 6 months after that you will see enter befor date. Do your 60 day bounces and time the last one to exit and return before the enter before date then go to immigration and extend 30 days. You will get almost 9 months. As soon as you stamp into Thailand that visa activates.
as long as you enter Thailand before the enter before date. When immigration stamp you in that's day one.

You get 9 months out of that visa. Exit every 60 days just before enter before date exit and reenter and extend that. 2x Land crossing is visa exempt entry only.

Without Extention - leave in 60 days (border bounce) With Extension of 30 days - leave after total of 90 days (border bounce)

Mad init so the 6month visa does allow me 6month just need to extend when there
Billy I am not an expert but the admins on this site are in Thailand where it is sleep time. I am fairly sure on this and would not have responded to you if not. A SETV gives you a 90 day window from date of issue to enter Thailand. You could enter on day 1 of that window or day 59 for instance and will get a single permission of stay of 60 days which can be extended one time by 30 days at immigration for 1900 baht. A METV is same same except your window is 6 months from date of issue and you can do multiple entries. All I can say for sure is that I have a couple of SETV visas and one METV and all of the dates support what I am suggesting to you. I hope this helps.
Billy think of a METV as a six month window to enter Thailand as many times as you like. Note that the window starts the day the visa is issued not the day of your first entry. Each time you enter you will get a 60 day permission to stay. Any entry can be extended once by 30 days at immigration at a cost of 1900 baht.
I would wait until someone confirms what I have said, but I think I am correct 😂
However if you start your 2nd 60 days the day before your visa expires, you could get just about an extra 3 months (60 plus 30 days) making a total of nearly 9 months, I think 🤔

As far as I’m aware, you have 60 days from entry date (the day you enter Thailand), then before the 60 days are up you have to go to immigration and get a 30 day extension. Before these 30 days are up you need to exit Thailand and return at some stage ( before the expiry date of your visa) then you get another 60 days plus a possible other 30 days.
The above is my understanding, sorry if totally wrong 😳

Howard Waudby - correct - except you don't have to get Extensions
