TLDR : Answer Summary
To stay in Thailand for 6 months, consider applying for a 6-Month Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV). This visa allows you to stay for extended periods, and if managed with proper border runs or extensions, you can extend it up to 9 months. After 3 months, you may need to leave Thailand and re-enter to utilize the multiple entries.

Get the 6 month Multiple Entrance Thai Visa (METV) if you can meet all the requirements...with proper border runs/extensions you can get 9 months out of the 6 month Visa

Okay, you're in the US now holding a US passport with plans to travel here next year. SO you should get a hold of one of the thai consulates that can sell you a 6 month METV <- multi-entry tourist visa.

That means go to the website of the thai consulate in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles or Washington DC and read the requirements to get a 6 month METV (multi-entry tourist visa).

After you gave you Nationality, I like to know you age,

After that the questions

How long do you like to stay?

Are you going to work inside or on line in Thailand?

Are you going to be a Volunteer?

Are you planning to study?

Are you planning to be a tourist and travel to places?

Why did you not look at the website of the Thai Embassy in your country to see all kind of options?
