TLDR : Answer Summary
The Tourist Multi Entry Visa (METV) allows you to enter Thailand multiple times, but each stay is limited to 60 days. You can extend your stay by 30 days once at an immigration office. To maximize your time in Thailand, you will need to leave the country (a border run) and re-enter to receive a new 60-day stamp. The visa itself is valid for use within 6 months from the date of issue, meaning you must enter Thailand within that timeframe.
the 6 months starts with the date that the METV multiple entry tourist visa is ISSUED... NOT ๐ซ the date you first enter Thailand.

Nope, you're looking at it correctly. There is no option to stay in Thailand for 6 months without leaving. The maximum you can swindle is 90 days at a time unless you start looking at the year long options. A huge frustration for many.

The visa has to be activated within 6 months of issue. 2 months each stay.
"2) The METV online application states "you need to prove that you have a genuine reason to visit Thailand on a regular basis." Does this mean you may be granted the METV, but then are not guaranteed to get a 60 day stay each time you re-enter?
you need to show them WHY you need an METV, so make a round trip booking 60 days from the date you're arriving in thailand to singapore for a few days and use that as the "proof" you need a METV.
Most consulates IF you pay the 200 USD but don't get the METV issued will NOT refund you the difference when they issue you a 40 USD single entry visa"
You need to leave every 60 days or plan to. You can do the extension after this first 60 days and leave after 90 and return for another 60 and repeat

Each entry will give you a 60 day stay, that can be extended at immigration in country for a further 30 days, you would then have to do a border bounce to initiate another 60 days etc. So if you do a border bounce super close to the end of the validity of the visa, you would get another 60+30, giving you a total of nearly 9 months from that visa.
