TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a retirement visa for Thailand, you must be over 50 years old and have 800,000 Thai Baht in a local bank account. It is advisable to start with a 90-day Non-O visa from your home country before arriving in Thailand. Once in Thailand, you can work with an immigration agent to streamline the process of applying for the retirement visa. Opening a bank account may require assistance and the necessary documentation, so many expats recommend hiring an agent to navigate the complexities of the visa application process.
90 DAY REPORTING RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Use the trusted Thailand 90 Day Reporting Serviceto get your in-person report done and mailed to you for as low as 375 THB (even if the online system doesn't work for you).
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

If you need to ask a question like this to a facebook group, rather than working through the Thai website yourself, it might be best if you simply pay an agent to do it for you. Just google “Thailand retirement Visa agent”, there, are plenty of them out there. Siam Legal (and probably others) have clear websites with explanatory videos, fees listed, requirements, etc.

There a numerous ways to obtain a visa based on retirement. I can only relate the way I used. Enter thailand on visa exemption, passport only, the same as going on holiday ,valid for a fixed period of 30 or 60 days depending on the law at the time. I then used an agency to facilitate the visa. The reason being you need a thai bank account with
*****
0 baht in the account for a period of time before applying for the visa. The thai banks will not issue a bank account without the visa, and no visa without the bank account. The agency applies on your behalf to the bank for an account with the intention of gaining a visa. After you have deposited the money in the account and received your visa based on retirement, when the time comes to renew (extend), the visa, you can visit that immigration offices and do it yourself.

If your unsure and like me email or look up Siam legal they will do everything for you and get you a bank account set up. That’s the most important thing. Some people on here go old do it yourself but guess what if you make a mistake back of the bus you go. Besides those guys do it for a living and know everybody in the embassies and it’s handled I think it’s about $1000 US. That’s what I’m doing in June. It’s a retirement visa, but also a marriage visa.

Assuming you have US passport, just buy tickets, fly, go to immigration, ask for a letter of permission to open bank account, state your intention to apply for retirement visa. Then go to Bangkok Bank, open account, deposit 800k thb minimum.

I recommend after open account, get an agent to help you file for the visa( knowing someone in the immigration help speed thing up.)an agent can cost you around 5-8k thb.

Won't work unless you arrive with a non-O visa already. No banks will open an account for someone who entered as a tourist, even with a residence certificate from immigration.

The "letter of permission" is a residence certificate. And that won't do anything if you have a tourist visa. Still need to be on a non-immigrant visa PLUS have the residence certificate to get a bank account.

Simple. Unless you have 800.000 Bath to put in a Thai bank account you can get a visa agent who is working with the bank and immigration. They will put that money for a few hours in your account while immigration gives you the stamp.. and you get the 12 months. When it expires you repeat the process. It’s the retirement visa and available for everyone above 55. You pay 18.000 to 20.000 Bath for this service. Each time. All visa agents in Thailand provide this service. 😉

Sir I can advise you to first COME to Thailand and start the process in country as it will be a lot easier, as you will not need things like health insurance or police checks etc. Then go to a visa agent and ask for assistance. Sure you will have to pay 30 to 50k thai BAHT but they will do just about EVERYTHING for you and you can get to enjoying yourself faster . P.s in groups like this there are a lot of jerks, pay them no mind and just block them when necessary. Good luck

We did ours on our own - it's really not that hard as long as you have the requirements met - $800 K Baht in a thai bank, rental lease, bank statements and letter from bank and it cost us only 1900 baht.

Eligibility:

Age: Be at least 50 years old on the day of application.

Financial Requirements:

Option 1: Hold a deposit of at least 800,000 Thai Baht (THB) in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before applying.

Option 2: Have a monthly income (including pension) of at least 65,000 THB.

Option 3: A combination of bank deposit and yearly income totaling at least 800,000 THB.

Health Insurance: For applicants of the Non-Immigrant O-A (Long Stay) Visa, health insurance that meets the Thai government's criteria is required.

No Criminal Record: You must not have a criminal record in Thailand or your country of origin.

Not Prohibited from Entering Thailand: You must not be prohibited from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act.

No Prohibited Diseases: You must not have any of the diseases listed in the Ministerial Regulation No. 14 (B.E. 2535).

Not Engage in Gainful Employment: You are prohibited from engaging in any gainful employment in Thailand.

get a non-o visa (retirement) and get a 90 days valid visa, with this visa you can go to the bank and request to open the account and then you can apply for retirement visa.

yes, but by getting the visa first in home country makes it way way easier to get a bank account based on long term visa once arrived.

Apply in country is harder as its very hard to get bank account without first having the visa. And you would need thai bank account to apply visa in Thailand

apply in home country if you don't have Thai bank account. Then get bank account after you arrive.

Exactly what I recently did. Used my income for qualifying and got a multi-entry O-A visa. Arrived here, got my residence certificate, yellow book and pink ID and was then able to open the bank account.

and that’s the truth. However, some people manage to get a bank account on a tourist visa. My personal advice is to pay an agent, it will cost you about 30k THB and they will do all the necessary paperwork etc, or you can try and do it yourself and roll the dice.
