How can I obtain a retirement visa in Thailand given recent banking restrictions?

Hello all,

Now that Thailand is making it hard to get a bank account for retirement purposes, how does one go about getting a retirement visa? It is my understanding that I will at least need to show I have an active account for at least 3 months before applying for a retirement visa USA or marriage visa.

Currently I come in and out of country every 2-3 months because I still work in Japan. I am also hearing I will not be able to do this anymore.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process for obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand has become more complex due to stricter banking regulations. To qualify, you generally need to apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa, which can be obtained from a Thai embassy abroad. It’s important to have a Thai bank account with at least 800,000 THB deposited for a period before your visa extension application. Many expats shared their experiences, indicating that finding a bank willing to open an account under these restrictions can be challenging. Some suggest using agents or applying for residency certificates to facilitate the process. Despite some conflicting information circulating in online forums, the consensus is that if you meet the financial and residency requirements, you should still be able to navigate the immigration system successfully.

Apply for Non Imm O-A visa from a Thai embassy outside Thailand.

Is anyone bringing this us at the ministerial level?

This is very bad publicity for a competing economy.
Michael *******
@Tom **********
not aware of any competing economies that allow bank accounts for non residents, Mongolia perhaps but enlighten us , please do……

You apply for a 90 day non o visa outside the Kingdom after you arrive on this you get a letter of residency from immigration by supplying them a 3 months at least TM30. Take that with passport home country ID to bank open account. Deposit sufficient

0 baht to get one year extension go back to immigration after its been in bank 8 weeks minimum and apply

If you use agency and
*****
0 thb in the bank you get with in a month

They even extend 60 days visa for you too
Chang ******
Use agent you can open the account easy

Even my friend got a driver license without no visa for only 2000 thb so

Impossible makes possible right .

Good luck 👍

How it’s hard? They only want 1 (one) app from a bank, so not several bank apps…

The crack down is to stop the Russians mainly. The Russian mafia are the one pooling the money to get people in. They are building Russian enclaves and working illegally. They are running illegal tours hotels and transfers targeting other Russian tourists.

Perhaps, if you apply for a Thai OA retirement visa in your home country you do not have to have a bank account in Thailand. It is required that you have the Bt800,000 in an Australian Bank, not in a Thailand bank. That is my experience. I have previously had 2 AO visas using simply an Australian original bank statement (not a copy but an original statement only).
Thomas *******
@David *******
Do you have to go back to Australia every 2 years to renew the OA? I think with an OA a person could probably open an account easier, hopefully, and move forward with a non-o 2 years later.
David ********
I have only had OA retirement visas several years apart before COVID-19. One of the bonuses of getting an OA visa in your home country is you can only get in your home country, that can allow you to stay in Thailand for up to 2 years, the first year on a retirement visa, the second year is an extension (you cannot get an extension with an extension) and the Bt 800.000 in your home country bank account is yours, you can do what you like with it. There was no fee for the 12-month extension. That was my experience some years ago. I believe it is now the same but you have to have insurance for medical cover now. a modest cover approved by Thailand. Also, you have to fill out an application form which has some requirements at the Thai Embassy. I have never had a bank account in Thailand for 15 years, there are ways around that.
Pat ****
I decided to simply visiting my girlfriend once a year for as long as I can, will have to to be sufficient. Otherwise, Thailand simply wants too much of a hassle.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address on a long lease, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Visited every bank I could find in Tha Bo, Nong Khai and Si Chiang Mai with a 90-day non-o Evisa and after a week and a half I finally got a bank account at Krungthai. I think I was the first Evisa they had seen and they had no idea how to deal with it, not realizing it was the same as a non-o visa without the paperwork. 2 banks told me to get a driver's license, did that, then I get a " sorry, we still can't do it" They wanted a certificate of residency which Nong Khai won't do for a bank account but they will do for a driver's license. The banks won't take accept a copy of the driver's license CoR for a bank account. They didn't even know how to scan an American passport, I had to show them.
Tony **********
Just apply for evisa abroad for non-o. Then arrive on the non-o and you shouldn't have any difficulty opening a bank account to get your 12 month extension at the end of your initial 90 days.
Nongnuch ********
@Michael *****
apply for the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa via the e-visa system of the Royal Thai Embassy in Japan. Enter Thailand on this visa, get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit. Visit an agent immediately and get your bank account opened. Transfer a minimum of 800,000 THB onto your account, wait until it has seasoned for two months and apply for the "1-year extended stay permit" on Immigration. Should you need to exit Thailand while being on the 90-days stay permit, buy a re-entry permit for 1000.- THB - it will keep your 90-days stay permit alive until its original expiry date
Tony **********
@Nongnuch *******
no need for an agent.
Nongnuch ********
@Tony *********
yes, no need, but a lot easier - and probably quicker. Time matters because of the seasoning requirement
Tony **********

it takes one day! Go to immigration in the morning for a residence certificate, have copies of your passport info and you're in and out of the bank within the hour.

Why is there so much conflicting issues on social media, I’m retiring to Thailand at the end of this year and I’ve done all my homework on what’s needed here with my 2 friends who have been through this procedure ,apply for a non-0 which I will get in my own country and then open the bank account when I arrive in Thailand, is this not true anymore? If so, how can you prove your financial status for your extension?,I will get the printout for all details from the immigration office who will deal with my retirement extension and not lister or read misleading posts on facebook anymore
Abu ********
Right now agents are refusing too as many agents were involved in malpractice in opening bank accounts in collaboration with bank staff.
Declan **********
Yes it's correct, the only people who are going to have issues opening a bank account are those arriving on tourist visas and exemptions. The current regulations that just came into play make it so even an agent can't get you an account on the DTV, TR and exemption. If you come on a non-... you should be able to open one without issue.

Get your 90 non-O visa from the Japan embassy and enter Thailand on the non-O. You should then be able to open a bank account on that visa

Money needs to be in the account for 2 months before you apply for the extension so you jave time.

im from japan

I was going to do that myself but so much so much paper work 😫

They ask you

Round tickets

Current working situation

Japanese Bank account information

For 3 moth of you staying at Thailand 🇹🇭

If you staying at your friends or wife need thire information too

So I won't recommend at all especially in Japan's thai embassy in Meguro Station
Tim *********
It is only difficult to open a bank account if you don't qualify. You need a long term non-Imm visa. Apply through the Thai embassy on-line. If you qualify they will grant your visa for 90 days. Arrive in Thailand, find somewhere to live (hotel for a few weeks will suffice) and make sure they have reported you living there. Then visit Immigration and ask for a Residency certificate to open a bank account. They will even address it to the branch of the bank you'd like. Open the account with the minimum funds required for your type of visa. Once the funds have been in there for the required period, usually 2 months, apply for the 12 month extension
Thomas *******
@Tim ********
Nong Khai immigration wouldn't give me a certificate of residency for a bank account in November. They did give me one to get a driver's license, but the banks won't accept a copy. Immigration said the bank needs to request a CoR and none of them would. Even with the 90 non-o it was still a pain to accomplish. Many no's and only one yes from Krungthai. You can only transfer 49,999 each day with them, so not the best option. Turned out to be my only option though.
Tim *********
@Thomas ******
That's a new twist, Thomas, for Immigration to say the bank must ask for the Residency cert

You need government approval to open a bank. Given that certain individuals, families and the government own the existing banks, how likely do you think it is they will approve your new bank?
Richard ********
@Randy *****
back in your box. If it's hard to open an account for foreigners, it'll be a tad more difficult to open a bank.

Actually it's this idea that created all these issues about having so much in bank for so long. Used to be just 800k for the extension, and then you could use it until the next extension.

However, some foreigners started to pool money and just move it around depending on who was up for the extension.

Apparently immigration got to hear about it, and now we have the weird amounts for random intervals requirements.

I doubt if there were ever more than a few doing it. But it backfired on everyone.
Anna *********
I’m pretty sure it’s only DTV ( tourist visas) that are having issues with bank accounts not the others so retirement should be ok
Luke **********
@Anna ********
DTV VISA is the only visa that isn’t affected because you don’t need a Thai bank account on a DTV , where as for retirement you need a Thai bank account so it’s the other way round to what you said
Anna *********

you are very confused 😀

You cannot get a bank account with DTV but you can with so called retirement visa which is what the OP was asking about and is what I said

Why can't you come in and out of Thailand from Japan? I know many Japanese residents who do so every 3-4 months visa exempt. I was one until getting my DTV recently. You can get a bank account via an agent despite some saying you can't , you can

I do have options. 1-I am married to a Thai and have not yet used or applied for a marriage visa. 2- I am looking for the least path of resistance. I can apply for a Non-O with multiple entries or do the one year renewal on the marriage visa.

Basically I am trying to figure this whole thing out.
Rodney ********
@Michael *****
just get the non o married to a thai

Best option

Easy to open bank account also either this
Kool *******
@Michael *****
you are making this too difficult on yourself, and thrown off by what you hear, and what people are saying. You are missing the important detail about why. To make this all very easy apply for your type O visa based on either retirement, or having a Thai wife, at a Thai embassy before you enter Thailand. This gives you the correct visa to get your Thai bank account in your name, transfer your bt800,000 into it, and after it has been in there for two months apply for your one year extension. It is very easy to do. Coming in on a tourist entry of any kind makes it difficult, and expensive.
Andi ***********
@Michael *****
oh multiple stays of 60 days on tourist visa is a red flag. Marriage visa is great option or retirement visa if you 50. DTV is very good if you work online.
Luke **********
It cannot be done whilst this ban is in place , agents can’t even get it done , they say will last a month or so so just have to wait and see how long it lasts
Brandon ************
@Luke *********
There isn't any ban. There's only a couple of high volume agents in Pattaya that lost access to opening bank accounts. Everywhere else and even other agents in Pattaya are still business as usual.
Steve ********
@Luke *********
there’s no ban. Banks are simply scared. The Thai government isn’t saying you can’t have a bank account. They’re simply telling banks to stop doing it when you shouldn’t. Banks will hopefully relax in the next few weeks.
