TLDR : Answer Summary
The post asks about the experience of Australians applying for the Special Tourist Visa (STV) for Thailand, specifically the application process and personal experiences. Comments highlight the restrictive nature of the STV compared to other visa options, noting limitations such as the inability to switch visas while in the country and requirements for paid accommodation for the duration of the stay.

yeah i got an exemption from home affairs to leave the country for at least 3 months..

I have been coming to Thailand for a few years now ,so the government knows i go to Thailand every month (pre-covid).

pretty info graphic, but outdated. For 56 countries who previously were eligible for visa exempt entries you no longer need a visa to travel to Thailand. Yep for all the other hoops but you get 45 days entry on arrival (up from 30 to compensate for the mandatory quarantine) and extendable for a further 30 days.

Just wondering why the STV? It’s very restrictive. Yes it gives you up to 270 days, but you’re super limited in the fact you can’t change it to any other visa inside the country and you have to show paid accommodation for the full time you’re here (after quarantine). Normal TR tourist visas or visa exempt much more flexible.

, your wrong . you can change to elite visa incountry .

no I’m not. The rules of the STV specifically state to you cannot change to any other form of visa in country. Perhaps if you pay an agent it might be possible but that’s not within the remit of this group to advise.

mainly because i got an exemption to be put of country (Australia) for at least 3 months. STV gives me 3 months at least..

But i was thinking just going on a normal TR visa and extend later if thats pretty easy to do..

The STV definitely has some hoops to jump through

the tourist visa gets you 60 days plus an extra 30 on application. Visa exemption is now 45 days plus 30 days on application. Both can be changed in country to other forms of visa you may be eligible for. Currently (and by no means guaranteed that it will be extended) you can apply for a “unable to travel due to Covid” extension which gets you an extra 60 days. At this moment in time that option is only available until March 30th, but may well be extended if the borders don’t open. It’s not looking likely that they will so a pretty good bet that it will be. But that being said it’s just a bet/hunch. Nothing guaranteed.

no worries. When I first read about the STV I thought it was a great option for long term “tourists” (aka the escape winter back home brigade) to continue to come to Thailand for 9 months. However after seeing posts from people who have tried to apply and all the stupid requirements needed it’s a dead dog option in my mind. The brainchild of a moron committee thinking up ways to get people back here with no clue on what “tourists” actually do or want.
