TLDR : Answer Summary
The post explores the difficulties Australians may encounter when attempting to travel to Thailand for an extended period of over three months on a Special Tourist Visa (STV). Responses indicate that many have not yet obtained an STV from Australia, partly due to travel restrictions in Australia. Some users mention exemptions for leaving the country and suggest alternative visa categories, like the NON-B visa. There are also discussions about the challenges of obtaining health insurance required for the STV, particularly for older travelers, leading some to opt for a different visa altogether.

I gave up trying to buy health insurance for the STV, AXA asking for health report because I am over 60 (see photo) other companies just no response.

Just been granted a TR visa no health insurance required, using complimentary travel insurance provided with my credit card. TR visa is 60 days with option to extend further 30 days.

I called the company today because I asked information for my friend in the USA. They said that they will allow low risk countries to get in first which Australia is one of hrem

I know there are restrictions on leaving Aus but do not know the details. That said I believe the STV scheme has essentiially been dead on arrival. The STV is not available in my country so finding info is more challenging but I think I read somewhere that financial requirements have been dropped to try to bring it back to life.

you can come here on NON-B visa category if you really want.

My mate that i work with in Australia got an exemption to leave Australia to go to bali. His exemption is based on being out of the country for 3 months or longer. We both work FIFO and commute from abroad he is Bali im in Thailand, i will try for the same exception in January. Just letting you guys know its possible to leave at least if you can prove its 3 months or longer..

I think Australians are not allowed to leave Australia until March 2021, was the last I read

@Chris ******
you apply for an exemption. This option has always been available via Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

not many are being approved, nearly impossible to get

@Chris ******
not "nearly impossible to get".

If you fulfill the criteria and receive approval from the Dept of Home Affairs, you then move onto the STV, or any other Thai Visa application, on the Sydney Thai Embassy site. The same Thai STV and other visas applied for worldwide.

The only difference is in Australia there is the requirement for approval to actually depart the Australian International Border.

let's agree to disagree, lots of people not been able to leave who I know and apparently lots of people you know are ๐Ÿ˜Š

"Lots of people I know"! Wow. Where did you pull that from?

Chris, either you fulfill the criteria to leave Australia or you don't. I imagine not too many are approved.
