TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on applying for a Special Tourist Visa (STV) from Australia. It highlights the importance of checking the Thai Embassy's requirements, as the STV cannot be converted to another visa type once in Thailand. Participants share personal experiences, indicating the process can be efficient if guidance is sought directly from the visa extension office and mentioning that a return flight may be necessary for the application.

I obtained a TR Visa from RTE in Canberra recently, the process was fast and efficient. If you phone in to the visa extension directly, they will guide you as to what you need. I was told that I needed a return flight already purchased for the process to complete. Just in case - you can only apply for STV in Australia if you are an Aussie or minimum a permanent resident.

you need to know that the Special Tourist Visa cannot be changed to any other visa type inside the country SO while you can come here, get stamped in for 90 days, and get two additional 90 day extensions giving you almost 9 months in country after that you leave and go back to where you came from.

Just want you to be aware of that before you go down the STV path

so when you leave after the 90 days are up. Can you still come bk and do the normal holiday visa and do the border hop after using the STV visa?

That visa is a single entry <- meaning the second you come in and get stamped in for 90 days the visa is done.

As David correctly stated, you come in you get stamped in for 90 days, and you can get two 90 day extensions at the immigration office. You don't need to leave at all during that time.

Now what happens after that, no one knows because right now the borders are closed and you ain't gonna border bounce like you could before this covid shit show started.

in the future yes but I can't see "border runs" happening any time soon.

Google Thai Embassy closest to you and see what you need to do to apply for STV. I'm assuming you're either Australian or a resident there.

i see there are several things needed to get the visa, most need to paid up front, ie. health insurance, has anyone else done this prior to receiving the visa?

yes you have to pay upfront for insurance. however, i understand that insurance company is able to refund if there is a sudden change in your travel. as for hotel, do look for those that allowed you to just pay for deposit and the rest upon check in or a few days before your arrival. i think it's better to have this flexibility as these days rules and regulations can change overnight.

Phil Jones yes perhaps. I think some embassy maybe pretty strict so have to read the sentences clearly. " Confirmed of 14-day quarantine in the Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ).' - this sentence i got it from Thai Embassy Norway, however when I checked Thai Embassy Singapore it stated 'A copy of Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ in Bangkok or ALQ in Chonburi or Prachinburi province only) confirmation with a proof of payment'
