Hello, we are new to Chiang Mai, have been here for 9 weeks. I’m here with my husband and two kids, our kids are enrolled in an international school and will be getting ED visas soon. Through that, my husband and I can attain Guardian visas for the school year. We are unfamiliar with the process of applying for Guardian visas and will need to leave Thailand soon to reset our tourist visas while we are in the process of applying for them. My kids have appointment on November 3rd to change their tourist visas over to ED visas. At that point, we assume we can start the Guardian visas process. We were also told we would each need to have 486,000 baht each in a Thai bank account. We were also told we may need to have our kids’ birth certificates notarized, which we don’t have the original copies here with us so would not be able to do. Could anyone recommend a good Thai Bank and any advice regarding the original birth certificates? Could my husband and I leave every 2-3 months to reset our tourist visas? Is that an option for staying here long term?
Answer summary
A family living in Chiang Mai seeks guidance on applying for Guardian visas after their children receive ED visas from their international school. They are unsure of the process, particularly the requirements for bank funds and notarization of birth certificates. The conversation reveals difficulties in obtaining long-term stays on tourist visas, the necessity of proper documentation, and suggests engaging agencies for assistance.

Engage some agency. That may cost. If anyone can sort out your situation, some agency might. I doubt you can fix it all that on your own.

Depends on where you’re from. My understanding is for US passports at least, just being certified is not enough. They have to be authenticated, which requires sending first to the state, then to the federal government, and then to the Thai , embassy to be legalized. I ended up just getting a retirement Visa. I didn’t have to show any money for my kids, education visas.

You have no chance of staying long term on tourist stamps. That's not what they are for. You seem to have a substantial amount of money. Why don't you just travel back and get the birth certificates. Or just have them sent by registered post. Just apply for the correct visa with the applicable documents. It's not too difficult if you just follow the rules.

At the moment it is very difficult to open a bank account on a tourist visa. You will not be able to stay long term on tourist visas.
