Trying to open a Thai Bank account so I apply for my Retirement visa.

On a tourist visa currently and so far 5 banks in BKK have denied me.

Suggestions??? And dont say "Use an Agent" Unless you have one to recommend. That's a useless contribution.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses challenges faced by an expat trying to open a Thai bank account while on a tourist visa. Despite visiting multiple banks in Bangkok with no success, the expat seeks suggestions, discouraging the use of agents unless specifically recommended. Various commenters provide insights, suggesting different banks (like Bangkok Bank and Krungsri), sharing experiences with requirements (such as needing an embassy letter, proof of address, and visa type), and emphasizing that rules can differ significantly between branches. Several commenters advocate for using agents, while others caution about escalating costs and difficulties in the current banking environment for foreigners.

So here is my update on my Retirement Visa. I connected with Simple Visa Thailand. Im busy and dont have time to mess around with all of this so it was well worth the money to have the bank account set up and help expedite me through the process.

Paul and Pink took great care of me and were a pleasure to hang out with while we had to wait throughout the day.

I met them at 9:30am and had my visa done by 4:30. Took a little longer due to an agent in immigration being out for a bit.

If you are in BKK and need help to get this done I would highly recommend them.

Have u tried Krung Thai Bank yet?

for tourist visa stamp on passport no bank can open an account. you need to go to Lao (before appointment) to get non o visa. than you can open an account (this was my case not sure how it works for others)

My accountant opened a new account for my visa. Not an agent or expensive company.

Getting a bank account

Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Each office is an independent business. Each office makes their own criteria.

You certainly will pay a fee for transferring USD from USA to Thailand. The amount depends on the bank and the transfer service.

Banking is an essential service if you plan to spend time here. It’s not FREE.

I prepared ahead of time by getting a bank account set up 6 months ago.

I treated this as an important business transaction, not just a casual activity.

My Thai friend made an appointment for me at the Bangkok Bank branch across from Astra in CM. He also translated for me.

I am a middle aged physician and dressed as such. Yes I did do the whole business card ceremony.

I told the banker that I plan to retire soon and buy a condominium at Astra.

I was asked to purchase a life insurance policy for about $100. Presumably the banker gets a commission. Whatever, it’s the price of doing business at the bank.

They wanted to copy my passport and see my credit card from Wells Fargo. I think I showed them how much was in my account also to make the point that I’m a serious customer.

I also showed them $500 in perfect $100 bills that was to be the initial deposit.

Nothing else was required.

Act like a serious customer and you will be treated as such.

Present yourself properly and you should be fine.

If not, thank them for their time and visit another office.

Best wishes on your adventure to Thailand!

This has become a bit of a train wreck post. As some people have mentioned here though, the best place to go is Bangkok Bank head office in Silom. Good English speaking staff there. You go in the main door and turn left and walk past all those tellers in the room and reach another corridor where you turn right and head on up to another big room where you can apply for bank account. As others have stated they will give you a list of requirements that you can choose from. For me the only option was to get the embassy letter that certified my address in home country and that of where I’m living in Thailand temporarily. Once you got that letter then you are good to go. Good luck

I used Siam Legal in Bangkok, took 20 minutes, easy!

I've read there's new rule concerning bank accounts being opened by people on tourist visas - it's not allowed any more.

I know it has gotten more difficult to open an account, but would suggest Kasikorn. Ask for the manager. You will normally have better luck with him than a clerk. Dress neat and tell him you planning to retire here next year. I think you might get it done. Let us know. Ask the requirements if he gives you a hard time. Might try a little "coffee" money for him if he doesn't budge. Good luck.

The basic requirement for opening a bank account is to prove you have a solid reason for opening a bank account. Work, marriage, or "permanent stay" are such valid reasons. The last one is proven by a Resident Certificate from Immigration. Some Immigrations like BKK are very restrictive for issuing an RC, while others like Phuket and Chiang Mai are ready to issue an RC against even a TM30 from a hotel.
David ***********
Bangkok Bank will with your girlfriend id

If you are in Bangkok then I’d recommend Siam Legal. I think the cost is 5,000 baht and they will open an account for you with Bangkok Bank. You might get lucky trying to open an account on your own but it is more miss than hit.

Just keep trying branches in different towns/provinces!

I have 1 & I still don’t not travel in a tourist visa!

Don’t listen to all the ‘know it alls’

I opened an account with SCB many years ago, so things might have changed.

I was being refused because of the wrong visa type, so I showed the clerk my pension docs and told them that amount would come in every month until I died.

They took my docs and passport and went and spoke to the manager, when they returned I had an account.

I was also accompanied by a Thai speaking friend. Good luck

Thanks for all the input. I just hit 6 banks in BKK. SCB says they can do it if I get my Passport Certified by the US Embassy. Wish the Visa Agent that sent me on this wild goose chase knew that before I wasted my day. Could have booked that appointment last week.

On that note, does anyone have a COMPETENT Visa agent in BKK? Im tired of the run around and my time being wasted.
Sean ********
Jam Forootanlast I checked the wait to get the notarization from the US embassy in Bangkok is around a month. I was going to use Siam Legal originally for my Non-O visa but ended up doing it all myself. They were very helpful and professional when I spoke with them.

Each branch is an individual unit, but if you try a branch near the immigrations you will have more success.

Opened at Bangkok bank Hua Hin, Have a Thai address, a letter from immigration, on a 60 day tourist visa
Deanna *******
Seriously, you will get different answers at different banks AND it can differ with location too!

We were told we had to have a bank account to get retirement visa, but told by the bank that we had to have retirement visa first. It was a very frustrating catch 22.

If you go to a bank in a high tourist area, your chances are better.

What is your current marital and residential status in Thailand? Are you married to a Thai? Do you live in a private residence owned by said wife.. or perhaps another relative? Yep a notarised copy of my passport issued by the embassy worked for me too and is actually written in the rule book at Bangkok Bank as the staff showed me it.

But of course on the internet they all believe walking to 1000 branches will serve them better lol
Zac ********
@Kevin *********
the Bangkok bank will give you a list of requirements when you go to open a bank account, one of them is a valid passport and visa then there is a list of about 10 things that you need to provide one of, one of them is notarised letter from the embassy another is an introduction from a Bangkok bank employee or a Bangkok bank customer. As the missus was a Bangkok bank customer I got my Bangkok bank account this way, it did take quite a bit of explaining their own rules but eventually I got an account, it was a bit of a ball ache but not as bad as having to go to the embassy to get my passport notarised.

a ball ache and I think it's around £50 as well, better to us a bit of patience to explain the meaning of the word "or" as they do like to try and insist on the letter as it's the first on the list.

they will want one from immigration I would think not the embassy.
Ken ***********
@Andrew **********
it’s from the embassy, nothing to do with immigration
Andrew ***********

most banks required a letter of residency from immigration to open a bank account is what I'm saying.
Ken ***********
@Andrew **********
Nop. I only provide my embassy letter. It’s also depends on your luck whether the branch manager accept it or not
Ivan ************
@Ken **********
it's either or, you can use from immigration or your embassy. In Bangkok immigration won't issue until after 90 days so embassy is the only option.
Andrew ***********
Brandon ************
There's more than 5 banks in a single mall. You haven't even tried yet. You need to ask a lot more bank branches as every branch even of the same brand has different rules. You need to be asking 40 or 50 or 60 banks. But it's gotten much more difficult in the last 1-2 years so many are using an agent to open an account now.
Gary *********
@Brandon ***********
If you are using a US passport, you will have a lot of problems to open a bank account. They hate all the FATCA paperwork including the W9 IRS form that must be completed. The solution is ask for the manager! Usually once you do this, they will hand you the forms. Best is to use the main branches in town not the shopping malls.
Kevin *******

Brandon ************
@Thomas ******
ask them what the requirements are to open a bank account. Though many will say a work permit is required which is obviously not true because then retirees could never open an account. Bringing a Thai friend along, especially if they have a bank account there, can sometimes help.
Thomas *******
@Brandon ***********
thank you, tried that. They wanted proof of residency. I appreciate your response though. My main goal is getting my money in place before my move. As I have said before, I appreciate all the time and effort you put into helping make everyone's transition to Thailand as painless as possible. 👍 I will add as an after thought, that my gf is a Lao lady that lives in Tha Bo on a visa. Her son ( thai born) is her guarantor.
Ivan ************
@Thomas ******
Proof is a Residency Cert from immigration, this is a common requirement. You can get it from immigration in most provinces on any visa including tourist and visa exempt. Bangkok you can only get after first 90 day but can get cert from your embassy instead. You do not need to have permanent residency to get this cert, many provinces issue to anyone, it's just an official record of your address. Bring proof of address like a lease and if you want it quick consider paying an agent to get it, it's free direct from immigration but sometimes they take a month or more, agent can get it quick.
