TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a Thai bank account while in the UK poses significant challenges. While some users mention the possibility of visiting branches of Bangkok Bank in London, it primarily caters to specific circumstances, such as having a local account or transferring funds. Many commenters agree that most banks in Thailand require individuals to be present in the country for account establishment and documentation processes. Furthermore, some users reference experiences where they successfully opened accounts during visits to Thailand on tourist visas, although this can depend heavily on the discretion of individual bank managers. It's suggested to review each bank's specific requirements and consider local alternatives such as international banking apps for currency exchange.

Go to krong Thai bank they will help you

It's hard to open an account while in Thailand
Do you have a yellow book or a work permit

My limited experience: Thailand remains under close international scrutiny regarding money laundering. Banks are extremely cautious about opening accounts. I always have to show my passport, which has my business visa, and I have been asked to produce my work permit. They want to know what you're up to. I would be surprised if they would do it from abroad.

I opened my account at the Bangkok Bank (Kao San Road branch) when I was still on a tourist visa. When I mentioned that my intention was to retire in Thailand, they immediately accepted.
whether you can or can't open a bank account on a 30 day visa exempt or tourist visa entry comes down to the manager of the branch you're trying to open the account at.
There is nothing in banking laws that prohibit it at all.
You most definitely can open a bank account in Thailand I have two Kasikornbank and Bangkok bank use for online banking mainly but no issues! Wouldn't imagine you could open from UK though? Lots of paperwork copies required.

I cant open a bank account in Thailand while in the country so I would suspect there is no chance from the UK. I have been told that you do not need a thai bank account when applying for a retirement Visa fir the first time. Once you have the retirement Visa you can open an account and at renewal will have to show a balance of

0 baht or around Ā£

or sufficient monthly income. I hope that helps and you have to apply for the Visa outside of Thailand.

I would like to post this information from the Thai consulate regarding the O A Retirement Visa. It makes vkesr that in first application a bank account in Thailand is not required. Just proof of funds or income or both.

Or having a deposit account and income/pension (per month X 12), a total of not less than 800,000 baht (in the case of showing a copy of the deposit account, showing the certificate from the bank.)
** (Note: in the financial evidence showing that the petitioner may provide proof of deposit accounts or income in the country of his or her country of residence, do not need to be a deposit account in Thailand.)

The marriage certificate must be provided as evidence and should be notarised by notary organs or by the applicantās diplomatic or consular mission.
3. Visa fee
5,000 Baht for multiple entries
4. Recommendations for foreigners with Non-Immigrant Visa āO-Aā
4.1 Upon arrival, holder of this type of visa will be permitted to stay in Thailand for 1 year from the date of first entry.
4.2 At the end of the 90-day stay, the foreigner must reports to the immigration officer in his or her residence area and report again every 90 days during his or her stay in Thailand. The foreigner may reports to the police station if there is no immigration office in his or her residence area.

A one-year extension of stay shall be granted at the discretion of the immigration officer to the foreigner as long as he or she meets the above requirements.
you just didn't go to the correct branch of the bank. There is nothing in banking law that prohibits someone on a 30 day visa exempt or a 60 day tourist visa from opening an account, it's totally up to the bank manager at the branch you're trying, SO it would appear you're applying at the wrong branches :P
In Bangkok you can go to Krung Sri bank at Centra World, OR Kasikorn bank in Emquartier and open an account with just a passport and your address written on a piece of paper
I opened my Thai bank accounts in Sisaket and Ubon with no work permit. I didnt actually want a second account but SCB offered me an account when I went into change some currency.
I have an account at UOB, wasn't asked about a national ID card, just passport

Just apply for Halifax clarity. You can take 20k THB from any atm in Thailand.
Vasiliy ********
I am normally take 20k in one go, which is around 500 GBP.
Vasiliy ********
I am using it for a year. Use UK exchange rate and recharge account in next 24 hours

No foreign transaction fees to worry about.
Worldwide fee-free cash withdrawals (some ATMs charge a usage fee. Interest will apply from the day cash is taken out).
but you still have to pay 220bt and if using such as Thailand Government Saving Bank it will also be in Thai Baht and you will get a charge for using it on your Halifax Account. I know. I am will Halifax and used it last month there.
youāve got to be so careful youāre in credit for the amount you withdraw though otherwise the fees are punitive. And constantly withdrawing cash with a credit card can affect your credit rating

I have Chase in USA, I make transfers thru Bangkok Bank NY and they deposit money in my Bangkok Bank account in KP.
Great rates and easy...
Daniel ******
When I did that through my US Chase account, Bangkok Bank still charged me an international transfer fee. It was pricey. Has something changed?
