Can a person on a tourist visa in Thailand apply for a over 50 retirement visa
Answer summary
Yes, a person on a tourist visa in Thailand can apply for a retirement visa (Non-O) if they are over 50, but there are certain conditions. One crucial requirement is having a Thai bank account with a minimum deposit of 800,000 baht. Without a bank account, the application process can be very challenging. Many expats suggest using an agent for assistance, as they can help navigate the complexities involved in obtaining the necessary visa and bank account. However, some individuals have successfully completed the process themselves by first obtaining a short-term Non-O visa, opening a bank account, and maintaining the required funds for a period before applying for the retirement visa.

But not all immigration offices will handle it.

You also have to apply atleast 15 days before your previous stay of the kingdom expires ( som places have 10 days, some 20 )

I think they need to apply from an embassy outside the kingdom and then exit and reenter with that new visa.

You need a local address, Thai phone number. There's a place in Pattaya called Tiktok that will get you your visa in less than 7 days.

*** The simple answer is: Yes, theoretically you can.

However, as a UK citizen, you would need an already existing Thai bank account in your sole name with a minimum of 800,000 TB already sitting in it, in order to be allowed to apply for the “change of visa type” from a visa-exempt or tourist visa entry, to the initial 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa.

*** the crucial point is, on a touristic entry, you can’t get a Thai bank account opened in your sole name.

You would need to enter on the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa which you obtained outside of Thailand, to be able to get a Thai bank account opened.

***some agents offer the “full package”, which means to get around the banking rules and get your bank account opened, the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa issued and followed by the subsequent 1-year extension of temporary stay permit based on retirement.

*** The agent who runs this group is offering a 2-3 weeks services and also a same-day service, starting from 45,000 THB

Yes you can by using an agent when you are here. It will cost you so you need to factor that in. Also do you have the 800'000 to deposit it in a Thai bank account there are agents that can do that for you but it's a dodgy way to do but if you're happy to take the risk than go fill your boots. But just be mindful just in case immigration gets wind of it you might run into issues down the road? Anything is possible if you have deep enough pockets.

It’s worth noting that our service requires you to visit Bangkok for one day.

If you’re able to return to your province by taxi or travel without your passport, you can still take advantage of our more affordable 2-3 week option.

However, if you need your passport returned before leaving Bangkok, you would need to choose one of our expedited packages (50,000-55,000 THB). Depending on your travel arrangements, this may still be more cost-effective than staying in a hotel while waiting.

With our 55,000 THB same-day package, we can arrange airport pickup and drop-off, and our team will accompany you throughout the entire process from start to finish. Everything is handled at Chaeng Watthana Immigration, allowing you to complete the process in a single day and fly home afterward.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Kev Raymond That's the current going price for the first time. You won't find any agent doing the "full package" (bank account, conversion to Non-O Visa, 12-months extension) for less than 45,000 THB. Myself I have already been quoted 80,000 THB

Frank-Steven Eichholtz No, you cannot use 800,000 THB sitting inside a Thai Wise account as the 800,000 THB bank balance proof for a Thai long-stay or retirement visa (Non-O / Non-OA) extension at Thai Immigration.

Key Rules for Thai Immigration Financial Proof:

• Thai Bank Account Requirement: The 800,000 THB (or monthly income/combination method) must be held in a Thai commercial bank account in your own name, not in a digital wallet, e-money service, or non-bank multi-currency account like Wise.

• Seasoning Period: For a retirement extension, the 800,000 THB must be seasoned in that Thai bank account for a specific period (typically at least 2 months prior to the first application, and 3 months prior to subsequent annual renewals).

Wise balances do not satisfy seasoning or official bank-book/bank-letter requirements.

• Using Wise to Transfer Funds: While you can use Wise to transfer the 800,000 THB into a Thai bank account from abroad, the money must actually land in your Thai bank account, be properly documented (such as showing an international transfer / Foreign Exchange Transaction / credit advice), and sit in the Thai bank account for the required duration.
Frank-Steven ***********
Frank-Steven ***********
Greg Alexander I see. Well, I kind of assumed as much. So instead of having the best of both worlds (a digital Thai bank account), the new Thai Wise is the worst of both worlds (forced conversion to THB without really effectively counting / serving as a Thai bank account). Strange, cause as far as I know Wise customers residing in Thailand have the money sit at Bangkok Bank in the background. Well, the Thai way.

Apply for the Non-o 3 month visa... Then you can open a bank account and transfer the 800,000 Baht that is required to qualify for a 1 year visa based on retirement. So get the money put into the bank account and let it season for 2 month that is required.

I did not use a visa agent as I didn't want to spend the money doing something I could do myself... But if you want the process to be easier, get some quotes from visa agents... Make sure they are recognised and reputable agents.

Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Ken Jermey for the application to the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement visa in your home country, you can use original income documents.

However, as an Australian citizen, you won't be able to use the income for the application to the 1-year extension, at least not in the first year, because your embassy in Bangkok does not issue any certified income affidavits for Immigration.

For the second-year application you could use a 12-months bank statement over monthly transfers of a minimum of 65,000 THB into your Thai bank account, proven the transfers come from abroad, month for month, not missing a single month. Once issued the 1-year extension, you could withdraw the 800,000 THB.

In this case most Immigrations will also ask you for some kind of proof of the source of the money.
John **********

Ken Jermey you can do it on income for the following years, but I believe that income must be shown to be deposited every month.... Not being late, the payments must be deposited in each and every calendar month. I would suggest to have the money transfered on the 3rd day of each month, that way if there is an issue, it gives you plenty of time to sort it out before the end of the month.
