I'm interested in knowing more about a foreigner being able to open a Thai bank account with only a tourist Visa

On the Bangkok bank website it seems to indicate that you can I have attached the requirements that they show on their website

A couple of things I don't know is;

one how to apply and can you do it online

I didn't see anywhere on the site that indicated you could

The other thing I need to know is the reference letter from the foreign bank or my bank in Canada it seems to say it needs to be sent by swift code

I don't know if I totally understand what format that reference letter needs to take and how to send

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is possible for a foreigner to open a Thai bank account with a tourist visa, although the process can be complicated and varies by bank and branch. While some users report success with just a passport and a letter from the immigration office confirming residential address, others have faced challenges based on varying requirements. There is no option to open an account online. Many commenters recommend taking a Thai friend along for assistance in navigating banking processes and requirements, as additional documentation like residency letters may be requested. Overall, the experience can differ significantly between banks and locations.

Did you try to tip the enployee 1000-2000 for bank opening?
Noel *********

Frank **********
Exactly what kind of insurance are these banks trying to push. Life Insurance, Accident Insurance? Is it worth it?

I used TMT travel and visa in Chalong. For few baht they set me up w Bangkok bank. Bank agent met me at visa agent w my passbook and card. In and out 7 minutes. Tourist visa ( 90 day) and TM30 from local hotel. Did this last week. No issues at all.

Kasikorn visa or not .

I opened mine on a 45 day visa exempt with just a passport, and a letter from immigration confirming my information and a Thai address that I was staying at. Also needed a Thai phone to set up online banking, and having a Thai spouse who already banked at that Bangkok Bank branch probably helped. They offered me the insurance which I politely declined.
Chan ******
@John *********
: May I know name of that letter from immigration please? How can get that letter? Thank you.
John **********
@Chan *****
my wife said it is ใบรับรอง which translates to testimonial or guarantee. It is basically my wife (or whatever Thai person is making the testimonial) saying where they live and they they know the person. Requesting it lets immigration know that the foreigner wants to open a bank account. Presumably an anti money laundering precaution.
Chan ******
Thank you John. May I know if there is any sample of this testimonial. My mom cannot open bank account too,but we don't have Thai relatives or friends help to sign on this.

I tried opening a bank account with BB in Bangkok and at each of the branches I tried they all asked for additional to my long term rental contract a notarized document from a Thai located US Embassy to confirm US information and address. I ended up going with K Bank but have an appointment still with the US Embassy since I want to open an account with BB still as well.
VaiAna **********
@Sean *******
. Really ! I was in Chang Mai & opened a bank account with Bangkok Bank back in August 2022 . I am a US citizen , on a tourist visa . They didn't ask for the notarized document located US Embassy . I was staying in a hotel/condo for 2 - 3 months . I went to Immigration to get the letter of residence and took that to the bank . The lady at Immigration was so nice . She said I could get a letter for my husband since he wasn't there with me and all I needed was a copy of his passport , visa and a picture .
Sean ********
@VaiAna *********
yeah i am guessing something new?
VaiAna **********
@Sean *******
. I think it all depends which branch you go to .
VaiAna **********
It's super easy & can be done in 1 day on a tourist visa . I opened one in Chang Mai at Bangkok Bank . 2 of my friends also tourists were successful in acquiring bank accounts at different banks

@VaiAna *********
I will be in Chaing Mai can you tell me which branch does that make a difference
VaiAna **********
@Myron *********
. I went to Bangkok Bank . When you go in there , they will tell you what you need in order to open a bank account . This is how I did it . I made copies of my passport (front page ) visa , one passport picture , copy of rental contract and 500 baht for processing . Wherever you're staying , they automatically notify immigration so you will be in their system . Since you're in Chang Mai , just show up to Immigration by the airport , volunteers there are helpful and they will tell you what forms you need to fill out . Head to the photo/ copy office behind Immigration ( still on the property ) if you need picture taken and next to that office you can get a TM30 ( certificate of residence ) . Gather all your paperwork and go upstairs and the lady ( super nice ) will do the rest . She will ask you how do you want to receive your letter . I said pronto and she said tomorrow it will be ready for pick up for 500 baht ....... My friend got an account with Kasikorn Bank in Chang Mai without going to Immigration to obtain the letter of residence . That's another option .
Craig *******
Hey I'm just curious - what are the typical fees? Is there such a thing as a no fee account? And presumably all banks have online banking? Are banking websites in English?
Jawahar *********
You can open if you have the address or agreement that you stay

no they don’t and that’s exactly what it will take - so unless you really need a bank account which 99% don’t, you won’t get most Thai banks willing
Bill *********
They still lie to you in the branch office

Bangkok Bank, Branch Thepprasit Road Pattaya will open if you buy insurance.

6000b

Roughly about 160U$

No paper work at all only passport required

I think it's not a big amount for saving future fees which is always at least 10 U$ each withdraw and don't need to have big cash in the room.

Plus one will get better rate bringing cash and change it at the yellow money exchange cabins.

But if an agent only charges 3500b of course it's a better deal
Russell *******
@Marc *******
Opening a bank account, should be and is a free service. You will always find people that stand in the way and try to charge you for something you shouldn't be paying for.

I guess someone people have the ability to digest that , but many won't. Do you feel your insurance policy is of any value ,or did you just bin the idea of claiming ? 😎🙏
Marc ********
@Russell ******
As you could see in my comment above. I calculated a bit.

Yes I know basically it is free.

But I don't have the stamina to get any paper from embassy, immigration travelling to BKK providing all necessary documents.

In "my" country it is not possible to just open an account without having a adress they send correspondance cards, pin codes etc.

And you need a residence permit also. So not possible just go with a passport alone and get trough.

So in Thailand I have to pay roughly about 160USD to have an account for a lazy person like me? Avoiding to run after some paper work joining queues, making appointments, online application you name it.

Plus when I withdraw at ATM with my bank card I get bad rates and pay at least 10USD for fee.

Naw Sir it's well considered. Acceptable for me
Russell *******
@Marc *******
ok , yes I get it. Do you know that if you use mobile banking and choose cardless withdrawal it's free . 🙏
Marc ********
@Russell ******
Actually I thought it is free anyway if I draw from BKK bank
Dave **********
@Marc *******
sad to report they talked a Thai Widow into that insurance. She needed a Bangkok Bank account for Direct Deposit of Pension funds she is entitled to from the the USA.

🆗️ yes not good for her.

I opened Bangkok Bank account with tourist visa in Chiang Rai. All that was needed was a letter from immigration office, certificate of residence. If it's any help I can forward the branch details.

wasn't I ? I had a tourist visa 🙏

Go to kasikorn bank with someone who speaks thai.dont know if things have changed but my wife opened my account in our local branch in chainart years ago I was on a tourist visa .if you have a address in Thailand you should be ok. Pattaya or a small province branch.
Alistair **********
Regulation changes. There seems to be a tightening, use to be able to have a true money account with just a passport few years ago but not anymore. There's about 10 or so recommended branches in Bangkok, they all refuse now.
Michael *********
@Alistair *********
agree. BKK is difficult

Just follow this site. Every day same question about opening a bank account. Not easy whatsoever

@Gordon ******
I do follow this site everyday, and cannot understand why it's getting harder to open a bank account, it was about 20 years ago when I opened my first bank account + a sterling

Account on soi bacaw.

After time they lapst.

When I moved up north and met the wife went into kasikorn took 30 minutes.
John **********
Perfectly feasible to open an account on a tourist visa. Taking a Thai citizen along to vouch for you is the simplest
Chinpoh ******
Go along with someone with a Thai ID no.
Sithu ************
Bangkok Bank Head Office at *Silom is the best to go. They got many english speaking employees there. Just stay you are here for bank account opening.

You cant do it online and the easiest of those options is to take a Thai customer with you - negates all the other BS. I avoid third party services like the plauge but if you dont know any Thais and want to get the job done quickly - pay for a service that assists.
DeWayne *******
@Duncan ******
I went to so many banks and was denied denied denied. I finally spent $5,000 baht and hire an agent and it was done in one day. I know many people laugh at me for spending the money but it makes my life so much easier I'll spend it

I opened one at the Bangkok bank two years ago with a letter from immigration, 500 baht.

i did earlier this year same way.

@Glyn *********
what was the letter name of reference? And what were the requirements from the immigration to issue you this letter?

As I recall they wanted residencial proof with a rental agreement.
Kool *******
At the very least you will need a residency letter from immigration, or your Embassy, and your passport. The main Bangkok Bank branch on Silom is the easiest to work with, although it is not that easy.
Graham ******
It's a case of try, try & try again even between branches of the same bank. You have more chance in tourist areas such as Pattaya.
Sam ************
I went to 6 banks and asked if I could open an account. All turned me down as a tourist. I sucked it up and paid an agent to help me open an account at Bangkok Bank in Pattaya.

Would you please give the contact of that agent please as my mother have the same problem. She needs to have a bank account before apply the Non-O and we have tried in Bangkok cannot do. If the bank account open in Pattaya can be used to apply the Non O visa in Bangkok, it is worth do it. Please help! Thank you.

I'm still a little confused

Can you get a thai bank account using a Visa agent well outside of Thailand

I ask this because it says you need proof a residency
Garrett ***********
@Sam ***********
Did you try a Bangkok bank branch by yourself?
Michael *********
@Garrett **********
same story for me
Sam ************
@Garrett **********
I did yes. Branch manager told me I needed a work permit. Went to 2 BB branch.
Brandon ************
Never expect to be able to do anything online in Thailand. You cannot open a bank account online.

They may have a website showing requirements, but the manager of each bank branch gets to make their own rules. So these may or may not be required at any particular branch, and there may be additional requirements not shown here. Then if you go to another branch a few blocks away, the requirements are completely different.

The only way to know is to go in person and ask if you can open an account and what their requirements are.
