How can I report identity theft involving my passport while I'm outside Thailand?

How do you report a crime when outside of Thailand?

Someone has (apparently) checked into a hotel using a copy of my passport and used my Accor points to pay for the stay.

Yesterday the staff told me it was an Indian guy with a different name who checked in, but they changed their story today and said it was my details (they cant give more info due to PDPA). I think they are lying about the passport, but need to report this to Patong police.

How do I go about this?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user suspects that someone has checked into a hotel in Thailand using a copy of their passport and their Accor loyalty points. They seek guidance on how to report this potential crime from abroad, especially since they believe the hotel staff may not be truthful about the situation. Community comments address various aspects of the issue, including hotel policies, the validity of using a copy of a passport for check-in, and advice on how to escalate the matter, including contacting Accor and the tourist police in Thailand.

UPDATE: reply from the hotel saying they never gave me the Indian sounding name on my initial phone call and I only called them once (untrue) Also that they advised me yesterday to contact the police (untrue, I suggested that)

They will only proceed with any investigation with “ appropriate documentation or any official notice from the judiciary”

I think you should call Accor there’s absolutely no way you can prove anything it’s all hearsay, the police won’t do anything when they have proof

So.

What exactly have you lost?

Some Accor points.

Well, prove to Accor that they were fraudulently taken and make them return them.

They will.

Accor will then demand refund to cancel payment to hotel. So the hotel will then lose out, as they should, as they allowed the identity fraud to occur.

As to you, you end up the victim of identity fraud, but other than that too have lost nothing.

No need for you to do anything in Thailand at all.

It’s pretty much the exact same process as if someone had used your credit card details and placed a transaction on your account that you then dispute…

lost points is fine, I will get them back. But if someone is checking into hotels using a copy of my passport then I need to know about it, obviously

With Accor points you still need to provide a credit card at checking for any incidentals? You can book a room using points for another person but the other person will still need to provide a credit card or cash as a security deposit. How did you know so fast that someone stole your points and checked into a hotel?

because I was booking another hotel on the Accor app and saw the stay that I hadn’t made.

Let's see, kid, the Thai police will accept a photocopy of your passport, okay? So why wouldn't a hotel accept a photocopy of what you're talking about, man, what are you talking about?

that’s not actually true, many accept a photocopy. And actually they admitted yesterday that it was a different person who checked in.

Why would this be a fake story? Oh because the scammer had an Indian name?

I would reach out to the Accor office and inform them that someone used your details for a hotel booking. They should be responsible for communicating with the hotel. What is confusing is, how did the hotel contact you and why were they contacting you?

I've always been asked to show a real authentic passport for check in, so it's definitely weird on the hotel side for a person to use a passport copy to check in, yet to redeem points. I'd report the hotel.

still your best bet if you have a problem is to talk to the tourist police in that area They will go right over there and they will talk to them and they will get it straightened out and it won't cost you anything. I lived there for 25 years One time I lived right in their compound. I went to ask him where there was a house for rent They showed me a house and I rented it and I found out I was surrounded by tourist police... 🤣🤣🤣💪
