TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, currently residing in Sukhothai on an OA visa, inquires about obtaining a US passport for their Thai-American child, whose birth certificate is in Thai and they are not married to the child's mother. They seek advice on securing both a US and Thai passport, and finding a certified translator for the birth certificate that meets the American embassy's requirements. Community members advise on the translation process, share personal experiences about obtaining citizenship and passports, and suggest checking Google Maps for translators near the embassy, noting that the US embassy typically accepts any accurate translation without special certification.

Am a USA citizen who had a child here in Thailand a few years ago. Had to get the Thai birth certificate translated into English. Went to the USA embassy in Bangkok and filed a Certificate Report of Birth Abroad. Sometime later, we got the certificate of US citizenship for my kid. Using this, also applied for a US passport, and a Social Security number. If you are not married, I believe you may be asked for a DNA test to establish paternity. I was legally married here in Thailand, so I had to bring translated copies of both marriages certificates. There was an interview and I had to bring the wife and kid. The kid now is a dual citizen, leaves Thailand on a Thai passport and enters the US with the US passport. Reverse procedure on the return trip. This was 15 years ago and laws change from time to time. The USA embassy had a list of nearby translators. Good luck!

The US Embassy will normally accept any accurate translation - the translator doesn't need to have any special certification.

Translators look on google maps near the embassy and search for nearest.
