US passport holder married to Thai wife with child that has Thai passport and Thai birth certificate. We only have a US marriage certificate. I plan to travel outside Thailand frequently for work and would like to apply for a one year multi entry spouse or guardian visa in Savannah ket, Laos so I don't need to bank money.

Is getting a US marriage certificate translated and registered with the govt office in chaeng watthana to use for the visa more of a hassle than getting married again in Thailand?

Is the guardian visa easier to get since we seem to have all the paperwork?

The only time I've used an agent was for this very exercise.. they got my overseas marriage certificate authenticated by the Embassy of issuing country and then got a translation done and duly stamped by the MOFA in Thailand.. whole process took around 2-weeks.. and they provided a translation of my passport (in case of need) at no extra cost.. so consider the fee of around 5,000 bht money well spent.. hassle free and done right!

You need to get your marriage license certified by thai embassy in USA. That’s a whole process. It took us a month or 2

Forget most of all these comments. You are not getting married here so you do not need a right to marry form. All you do is get your marriage license translated into Thai. Have this translation certified as being accurate and stamped by the ministry of foreign affairs. Then you take this translation to the local Amphur (in Bangkok the BangRak Amphur at the end of SiLom is the best). Then they register it and you are done.

To marry in Thailand, the local amphur would require you to submit a notarized affidavit from the US embassy in which you swear under penalty of perjury that you are single. Since you're not single, that would seem to present a pretty major obstacle.

I believe the local amphur ask you on the form if you are married to another person. It doesn’t ask you if you are single

The US affidavit, which is normally required by the amphur. If the OP wants to try to do a free-form affidavit in which he changes the wording so as to avoid misrepresenting himself, he could try that, but it might or might not be accepted.

I'm Australian so obviously the US affidavit didn't apply to me. All I remember the amphur asking to state that I am not married to another woman. I married my Thai wife in Australia first, but then registered again in Thailand at the local amphur and had no problems.

You wont get the 1 year multi-entry based on being a guardian at Savannakhet without showing finances. Only the 90 day Non Imm O.
