TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster seeks advice on moving to Thailand with a monthly passive income of $4000, considering they have a wife and a young daughter. Commenters provide various insights, highlighting the importance of their age, desired lifestyle, and visa options. Suggestions include exploring education visas for the family, considering the new LTR visa, or obtaining a retirement visa if over 50. While some believe $4000 a month is sufficient to live comfortably, others caution about the costs of housing and education, especially for a family. The discussion emphasizes the need for detailed research on visa types and living conditions in Thailand before making a move.

I saw an American woman on YouTube moved to Chiang Mai with her family and 8 kids. They are all on Ed visas. But for the long term Ed visa won't work.

You could live on $400 a month or $
*****
a month depending on your lifestyle. $4000usd is not a problem at all in fact a good play amt but the thing people do not realize in thailand is that there are leaks in finances unseen if you are not careful.

You cant live in Thailand 4 months of the year. No father would inflict that on young lungs. Cancer rates in young people are sky high in Thailand, and its lung cancer that is killing them.

@Tulip *******
donā€™t be so ridiculous in public - certain areas ( in the north ) are bad yes for a few months but the vast majority of Thailand is perfectly fine

Phuket had it, West had it, Kanchanaburi was worse than CM at times. All of Thailand was affected, the winds brought it it from Cambodia. It drifted over from Myanmar and Thailand's own burning in the north east and west blanketed much of Thailand. Between Kanchanaburi and Bangkok we were covered with fine ash every day for 4 months. Even my Thai workers got sick and could not work, and that's highly unusual. Because they don't get paid. 2 million people were hospitalized and the Thai government told its own people to work from home if they could and stay indoors. 14 year old kids are dying of lung cancer. Its great now, but feb to may is poison. Try watching TNT even he was spluttering, broadcasting from Phuket. The only people who are ridiculous are those with a vested interest telling everyone, 'Nothing to see'

I just live here ( without any vested interest )

I didnā€™t say nothing to see - not necessary to put words in my mouth that I didnā€™t say ( of which you have plenty ,seemingly plucked from your ass )

I think the first question you should ask yourself is if Thailand is going to be your forever home or if it's just for a few years.

A few years are easily doable, but making Thailand your forever home is in your situation not that easy.

You can get by for a few years on ED and visa run/border bounces, and if you study in a UNI you can add a few years. After that, your only 2 options will be getting a job or purchasing the elite visa (passive income won't grant you LTR)

I wouldn't find it particularly funny, trying to set up a life with my family in Thailand, not knowing if the next border run was gonna be my last, or finding myself on the wrong side of the border with no way to enter Thailand.

Many people will tell you that your budget is plenty, and it might be so. It all depends on location and your lifestyle expectations.

If a small Thai townhouse/house or condo is what you need, your favourite food is Thai and you choose a place away from the tourist sites. Then you will have plenty.

If you expect a Western standard of living and settle down in a popular spot, then you might struggle.

I would suggest to send me $1'000 per month and you and your family can comfortably live on $3'000 per month here in Thailand.

US Govt should have a similar information website?

Go to the Thai Embassy site in the US if you are still living there and look at the type of visas available. Housing is cheap here compared to most places in the states. Big cities like Bangkok are more expensive to live in. Medical treatment is a lot less money then in the US also. I don't really know much about health insurance other then I heard most exclude existing conditions. Do as much research as you can about Thailand.

And last but not least thank you for your service. From a fellow veteran.

Sorry: Got your question wrong on my first response. Here is another one (from another person making adequate amounts of money while still not having it handed as easily as most old / over 50 year old people have it handed here): Think about it hard and good - after having spent a longer time here, first. If you can somehow rearrange your income ā€¦ the newly LTR visa is the most economical way. Else: Donā€™t throw your money out the ā€œEliteā€ visa window. Passive income does not count as working ā€¦ so explore the other ways of being permitted a longer term stay. From border bouncing on METV to ED visa. For the latter ā€¦ you could / and maybe should learn Thai for a year. Then there is ā€œcleverlyā€ created other ED options (like listening to some English lectures a few times a month / year in English with e.g CMU University). You could also open a Thai corporation and employ Thai employees, but this will cost you, and wonā€™t likely be profitableā€¦ but it could sponsor a business visa for you and your spouses. Another thing to look into might be an umbrella employer like ā€œShelterā€. Bottom line: There is always a way in the land of smiles. But easily only for the elderly ā€¦ why ā€¦ donā€™t know. For the rest of us ā€¦ never straightforward.

Frank is offering the best advice among some of the moronic responses here. With $4k USD passive income, you can live comfortably in many, many nations. Choose what suits you best. The pathway to long stay visas is a little bit complicated here until you are 50, but manageable. Good luck

That is good for a signal dude but not good for a family. Your daughter's education and housing would eat up half your passive income already. You'll need an active income to support the family.

My advice is too move there. 4k a month you will live like a rockstar
Jon **********
For a single person or couple this amount would be fine. Could both get education visas for around $4000 per year. But with a child international schooling costs $15-30k per year.
Richard *********
@Jon *********
BS:

visas Legal less than $500/year for 2 of them

school for less than $5,000-7,000 ( till the child is 12 or so)

If ur child is in a legit school, one of you can get a dependent visa but the other???

the other would need go to a school for an ED visa ( apx $1,000/year)

$4,000/month is plenty to live here, I live on alot less for 2 ( but no kid)

Depends on how old you are and what lifestyle you are looking for. Not enough info to advise.

Are you over 50 or under 50?

That's one of the critical questions if you can apply for a longterm visa or not!
Reginald *******************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Polo ********
Iā€™m in my 30ā€™s
Polo *********
@Reginald ******************
Then it will be not easy for you to apply for a longterm visa. Maybe it's possible to apply for an ED Visa or - in case you will find an employer - you may get a Non B visa in combination with a work permit for a specific kind of work. The most easy (and most expensive solution for you) would presumably be an Elite Visum.

Everything gets more easy if you were getting older than 50 years because then you can apply for a Non-O-Visa.

I would suggest that you have an intensive look at the website of the for you relevant Thai Embassy.

There you will find all necessary requirements for a possible longtime visa types that maybe will come into question for you! Good luck!

start your own business if you have the money to invest

Get a job but you are very limited as far as jobs are concerned look at the thai embassy website for the jobs that you cannot do,

You are so limited

How old is your young lady you can look into the educational visa for her and see how it works for you and your wife
