I’m a US citizen currently working remotely from Ethiopia & am trying to apply for a DTV. I’ve two dependents (wife & kid) that are both Ethiopian citizens. How do I go about this?

Do I apply as if I’m living in Ethiopia (in which case the application apparently is handled by the consulate in Niarobi) or do I apply as if I’m living in the US. If the latter then would the consulate in the US also handle the case for my wife/kid although they aren’t a US resident?

You would need to be in the US to apply to a consulate there. If you wanna remain in Ethiopia then the Nairobi embassy is the way to go.

You would need to check with the Nairobi embassy if you can apply as a non permanent resident. If yes, your family can apply as dependents upon your approval. If you apply in America, you need to check that your family as non perm residents can apply as dependents.

You have to apply using the consulate that serves your current location so if you're in Ethiopia you can only use the consulate in Nairobi. How it works is that you apply for your DTV and once it is granted your wife and kid then each apply quoting your DTV approval and providing proof of marriage and parenthood. They also apply using the consulate that serves their location. Note that you can't apply via any of the US consulates if you are physically in Ethiopia

if you not citizen or resident in one of the East African countries they cover, then they will cancel or reject application. So resident has to provide resident permit not just tourist visa or family connection. And embasy in Nairobi never ever respond to email or answer phone 🙂

I suggest trying to call the embassy in Nairobi or sending them an email, but when I was in Zanzibar, I tried calling many times every day and also sent emails, and no one ever answered. Eventually, I just gave up and applied somewhere else.
