TLDR : Answer Summary
An American/Thai citizen can return to the USA by using their Thai passport to exit Thailand and their American passport to enter the USA. It is important to have valid passports with at least six months of validity remaining. When leaving Thailand, if there are concerns about overstaying the visa, it's advised to consult with the Thai immigration office or the U.S. embassy for guidance. Assistance is available from family and friends to navigate the process.

Yep I have both passports too and u only ever need to use your Thai passport when coming in and out of Thailand. The rest just use ur US passport.

You'll need to get a passport from the US embassy in Bangkok using your birth certificate.

We do know that he got a new thai passport here in thailand (if his profile is to be believed). When comin' to thailand on ANY countries passport you only need to have as much time remaining on it as you're getting stamped in for.

The 6 months remaining on a passport rule is for buying a visa to thailand from a thai consulate not coming in on a visa exempt entry or with a valid visa already in your passport.

Also a thai national can come into thailand on an expired passport. My friend from the US who holds a US and Thai passport) just came back here on a thai passport that was 6 years expired :O He got in just fine and will get a new passport here.

Until the O/P weighs back in with some facts, we're just speculating and

, good point (y) You're right i don't totally understand the situation and it's the reason I asked what passport they entered thailand on and what visa or extension they have now.

Until we get more info, we're just taking shots in the dark about what they should do.
Kurt ********
its mostly gibberish but he states he has both but also stated that he just renewed the Thai one so i'm thinking maybe the US one is expired as well
Tod *********
he states he has an american passport
Tod *********
Okay, how about stating what passport you are here in thailand on now and what visa or extension are you on?

The good news is IF you did stamp in on your US passport and are on overstay you as a thai wouldn't have to pay the fine and would just show your thai i/d card when you go to stamp out of the country.

You would still get an overstay stamp in your passport though BUT you couldn't be banned or fined for it.
Tod *********
If you're here on the US passport you can't stamp out of thailand on the thai one.
Tod *********
Okay, now I see in a post you made about your concern for overstay. What is that all about? Did you come in to thailand on the US passport? Because if you did you're in here as an american no matter if you hold thai nationality or not.

Walter Lauriton, you don't need to go to the thai embassy and ask them anything.

You leave thailand (stamp out) on your thai passport, when you arrive in the US you show your US passport. When you leave the US you show your US passport and when you stamp back into thailand you show your thai passport.

It's probably technically a “Consular Report of Birth Abroad” (FS-240) from the consulate or a “Certificate of Report of Birth” (DS-1350) from the Department of State if he was born in Thailand, it is a different document technically but for all intensive porpoises works like a US birth certificate.

That's. What, I was concerned about. The visa, or overstay. Charged. The Thai government . Can hold. Up a departure. Out, of the country. That's, why I'm asking. All, of your advice. Before, I go to the. U. S. A. an Thai embassy. Is there. Any question. I should ask.

You can travel with many passports if they are valid and have at least 6 months on them. America does not recognize dual citizenship so always best to show only your American passport to them. You would require a visa for the Thai passport if you used it. So out with the Thai passport and into USA with the American. Simple and reverse coming back. The Thai passport is good in Asean countries because you don't have to pay for a visa to enter them. Hope that helps.
